I was stationed in Berlin 1967-1969 with the Glosters and did several duties at this place. On two separate occasion I and a mate were picked to do duty inside the prison. The first thing I noticed, on entering the corridor, was the round windows in the floor, each about a foot wide and evenly spaced out. I was told later that the windows looked into cells, I never asked why, I had my own opinion. We were told to walk about the prison, which we did. In the cells, most of which were small, there were the usual pencil marking on the walls, scoring off days, weeks, months etc, a lot of names written in English. Outside we were able to take advantage and have a good look around and we went into an L shaped building which had ovens in it.
On the photograph the L Shaped building is to the upper left. At the top of the photo you can see a line of tall buildings that was Brooke Barracks where I was stationed. Also at the top right, you can see open doors, those were the M.T. Sheds. To the right of those sheds, in a separate building was the church.
The 17/21st Lancers were stationed opposite to our barracks, on the other side of the main road.
