South African Special Forces

The Special Forces Beret Badge is worn on a Maroon Beret.

Both the Maroon Beret and the maroon background of the Beret Badges denote the Airborne Capability of the Special Forces Regiments.

The Beret Badge is comprised of a Compass Rose in the centre of a Laurel Wreath.

The Compass Rose is the emblem of the South African Special Forces. It denotes the ability and willingness of the South African Special Forces to Deploy and Operate in any location, by any method, in any situation, under any circumstances, in any terrain, anywhere, at any time.

The Laurel Wreath denotes Victory.

1 Reconnaissance Regiment / 1 Special Forces Regiment

The Unit Emblem was three Commando Knives, above the Compass Rose.
Special Forces School was also located at 1 Reconnaissance Regiment / 1 Special Forces Regiment.
1 Special Forces Regiment was retired in 1997 As part of the process of rationalisation and downsizing.
Its personnel were incorporated into 4 and 5 Special Forces Regiments.
Special Forces School was thereafter moved to 5 Special Forces Regiment, but has recently
been established
as An independent Special Forces unit.​

The Unit Emblem is a Viking Helmet, above the Compass Rose.
As this Regiment specialises in a Seaborne capability,
the Viking helmet alludes to the units proficiency in this element.​

The Unit Emblem is a Parachute within the wings of an Osprey, above the Compass Rose.
The parachute alludes to the regiments airborne capability.
The Osprey Wings allude to the fact that former members of the Selous Scouts were previously incorporated into the Regiment.​

2 Reconnaissance Regiment
The Unit Emblem was a Scorpion, within the wings of a Bat, above the Compass Rose.
2 Special Forces Regiment was retired in 1992, as the concept of Citizen Force (Territorial Army) units was discontinued
Retired Special Forces Personnel who continue to play a part in Special Forces on a Citizen Force basisnow form part of the Special Forces Reserve which is administered by Special Forces headquarters.​

This symbol alludes to the provision of technical and logistical support services, provided by this unit to the Regiments.​

The Unit Emblem is a Compass Rose superimposed over crossed bayonets.
The Compass Rose denotes Special Forces, and the crossed bayonets denote a Command within an Army context.​

Silver Operators Badge for up to 10 years continuous service
Gold Operators Badge With Diamond for more than 10 years continuous service​

The Special Forces Operators Badge is the symbol of a qualified South African Special Forces Operator.
The Special Forces Operators Badge is awarded to persons who have
applied to undergo, have been evaluated and accepted to undergo,
and have thereafter undergone and successfully completed
all practical and academic aspects of theSpecial Forces Pre Selection, Selection and Basic Operators Training Cycle(duration approximately 1 year) of the South African Special Forces, and who have thereafter qualified as South African Special Forces Operators.​

The Special Forces Operators Badge is comprised of an inverted Commando Knife within a Laurel Wreath. The Commando Knife denotes Special Forces. The Laurel Wreath denotes Victory.​

The Special Forces Operators Badge is worn above the right hand side pocket on the uniform, above the name tag, and above any other Proficiency Badge.​

The Special Forces Operators Badge is a proprietary Special Forces Badge.
It is worn solely, only and exclusively by qualified South African Special Forces Operators.​

Each Special Forces Operators badge has a Unique Number.
Strict and detailed records are kept of each Special Forces Operators Badge, against the name of the specific Special Forces Operator
to which each uniquely numbered Operators Badge was issued.​
