The 184th Field Artillery Regiment, an African-American unit, was inducted into Federal Service from the Illinois National Guard at Chicago in January 1941 and was moved to Fort Custer for assignment to the 2nd U.S. Army. The regiment was reorganised and renamed several times as they moved with the 2nd Army to Europe for wartime service that ended in Germany in 1945.
