IN MEMORY of the men of Shrudington who were killed in the War 1939 – 1945


Sergeant 5379224 Stanley James ALLEN. Military Medal, 7th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died 12 November 1943 aged 31. Son of Thomas Charles and Annie Caroline Allen, husband of Beryl Irene Allen, of Little Shurdington, Gloucestershire. At rest in Naples War Cemetery, Italy.


Alfred John CHAPMAN Not listed with the CWGC He may be the following . Lance Corporal 44594 Alfred George CHAPMAN. 1st Divisional Petrol Coy, Royal Army Service Corps. Born 1909 in Gloucestershire to Alfred John and Alice Louisa Chapman nee Hill. In 1911 with his parents and siblings at Hatherley Inn, Hatherley Road, Cheltenham. He died at sea off the Dunkirk Beach 29 May 1940 when he and many thousands troops were being evacuated back to England. He is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.


Sergeant 931908 Ronald James HARRIS. 269 Squadron Royal Air Force (VR) died 1 September 1942 aged 24. Grandson and adopted son of Mrs M G Harris, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


Private 7516007 Edwin Bruce HUNT. Royal Army Medical Corps. Died 29 May 1942 aged 28. Son of Benjamin and Gladys Hunt; husband of Elsie Gladys Hunt, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. At rest in Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya.


Drummer 5183302 Douglas KNIGHT. 5 Gloucestershire Regiment died 28 May 1940 aged 19. It appears that he was fostered by Abraham and Hannah Hawkins nee Carter. At rest in Ledringhem Churchyard, Nord France.


Flying Officer, Pilot Instructor 84000 Cyril George William MOORE. Royal Air Force (VR) Killed on active service 26 April 1941 aged 22 at Fulmer Chase, Buckinghamshire. Eldest son of Rev George Guy and Vera Helen Moore, husband of Josephine Phyllis Marie nee Rice, 16 Broomfield Court, Sunningdale, Berkshire. At rest in Bournemouth East Cemetery, Hampshire.


Major 63572 Sir Anthony Frederick Mark PALMER Royal Artillery attached to Special Operation Executive missing presumed killed in the Middle East 18 May 1941 aged 26 on Operation Boatswain on board “Sea Lion” 4th Bart. Classical Scholar, Trinity College, Oxford, King's Cadet, Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Son of Frederick Charles and Mabel Frances Palmer, nee Hallett of Shurdington Court, husband of Lady Henriette Alice Palmer,nee Cadogan of Fairford, Gloucestershire. His wife was Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Commemorated on the Brookwood 1939 – 1945 Memorial, Surrey.

On Friday 18th May 1941 the "Sea Lion" (in Hebrew Ari Hayam) Commando boat embarked from Haifa Port on "Operation Boatswain". Aboard the boat were , SOE Officer Major Sir Anthony Palmer and 23 Hagana members. Their mission was to destroy the oil refineries near Tripoli in Lebanon. The Commandos disappeared without carrying out their mission and they are missing ever since.
The "Sea Lion" and its crew never reached their destination.
