GREENWOOD, Samuel. Private 46471, 13th Devonshire Regiment, formerly Private 25571, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry, died 1st May 1920. At rest in Wolverhampton Cemetery, Staffordshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 14th February 1916 aged 37 and 4 months old, occupation was a furniture remover. He was mobilized on the 24th March 1916 and posted to 3rd Somerset Light Infantry. On the 29th March 1916 he was attached to the 12th Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry. He was then transferred on the 29th October 1916 to the 13th Devonshire Regiment. His mother, Mary Ann who lived at 62, Faulkland Street was his next of kin. On the 7th March 1916 he embarked Southampton for France and disembarked at Le Harve the next day. He was shot and wounded in his left leg, in the field on the on the 22nd August 1916 and was treated in 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen. On the 26th August he was transferred to England on Hospital Ship, Asturias and was admitted into Birmingham War Hospital on the 29th August. He was discharged from hospital on the 17th October 1916. He was transferred on the 14th February 1917 to Class W, Army Reserve ( Class W Reserveand its Territorial Force equivalent Class W(T) were introduced in June 1916 by Army Order 203/16. They were for all those soldiers whose services are deemed to be more valuable to the country in civil rather than military employment. Men in these classes were to receive no emoluments from army funds and were not to wear uniform. They were liable at any time to be recalled to the colours. From the time a man was transferred to Class W, until being recalled to the Colours, he was not subject to military discipline.) He medical catergory was B.2. He found employment as a transport worker at Pickfords Ltd (Furniture removers and hauliers) at Leamington, Warwickshire. He was finally discharged from the army on the 30th January 1919, surplus to Military Requirements, having suffered a disability since entry into the service. He was discharged to home at 2, Wise Terrace, Leamington.
