Roll of Honour 1914-1919

The names of those men of the parishes of Coxwold and Yearsley who served with His Majesty's Forces in the Great War 1914-1919.
The following did not return.
AGARS Robert Christopher. Lance Corporal 143778, 41st Machine Gun Corps. (memorial has King's Royal Rifle Corps). Died 9th April 1918 aged 28. Son of Robert and Barbara Agars, of Coxwold, Yorks. At rest in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, No3, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

BAMBER, Hills. Lance Corporal C/12017, 21st King's Royal Rifle Corps. Died 21st September 1916 aged 27. Son of Mrs. S. Bamber, of Stillington, Easingwold, Yorks. At rest in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

CHAPMAN Edgar Walton. Private 28460, 6th Yorkshire Hussars, (memorial has West Yorkshire Regiment). Died of wounds 15th January 1917. Born at Hawnby, lived at Oulston, near Easingwold, both of Yorkshire. Son of John J. and Margaret Chapman, of Thorpe Grange, Ouseburn, York. At rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France

CORNFORTH. William. Private CH/19029, 4th Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry. Son of David and Ada Cornforth, of The Cottage, Coxwold. At rest in St Michael's Churchyard, Coxwold, Yorkshire.

DAWSON Harry. Private 44138, 24/27th Tyneside Irish, Northumberland Fusiliers., formerly 26201, East Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 27th August 1917. Born at Farsley, enlisted at Leeds both of Yorkshire. At rest in Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.

DUNNING Percival. Private 8298, 8th Yorkshire Regiment. Died 7th June 1917. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

ENGLAND John. Private 20215, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment. Died 31st July 1917. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

HAYTON Alfred. Lance Corporal 30370, 4th Yorkshire Regiment. Died of wounds 20th November 1917. Born at South Cave, Yorks, lived at Wass, Ampleforth, enlisted at Coxwold and is at rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

HORNER, George William Alfred. Private 2986, 5th Yorkshire Regiment. Died 23rd June 1916, son of James Alfred and Alice Mary Horner, of Yearsley, Brandsby, Yorkshire. At rest in La Laiterie Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

KNOWLES James Francis. Private 4462, 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment. Died of wounds 5thMarch 1917. Born at Crayke, enlisted at Harrogate both in Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

SAVAGE Duncan. Corporal 39796, D Battery, 124th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, (memorial has Royal Garrison Artillery). Died 25th August 1918 aged 29. Son of Mrs. Annie Savage, of 29, Sycamore Terrace, Bootham, York. At rest in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

SUFFIELD Percy Alexander. Gunner 143566, 100th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Killed in action 23rd February 1918. Son of George and Margaret. At rest in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Nord France.

WHINCUP William. Corporal 35137, Royal Field Artillery died 5th January 1918 aged 24. Son of Edwin and Jane Whincup, of 103, Bradford Rd., Blackgates, Tingley, Yorks. Born at Oulston, Easingwold, Yorks. At rest in St Michael's Churchyard, Coxwold, Yorkshire.

WINSPEAR Harry. Private 33299, 6th Yorkshire Regiment. Died 16th August 1917 aged 27, son of Hannah and the late Fredrick Winspear, of Thornton Hill, Easingwold, York. At rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

WYLIE Fred. 3rd Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Not listed with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
