Extended Description
To the glory of God and in memory of Robert Craig GARDINER. Major, 16th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles (County Down Pioneers). He joined the Royal South Down Militia as bugler in 1876 and was Sergeant Major of the regiment for many years. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, in South African Campaign 1901-02, in 1914 he received a commission as Captain in the 16th R.I.R, and served as 2nd in command (2IC). In France being Mentioned in Despatches (MID). He was invalided home in 1916 and died on the 14th November 1922 from disease contracted when on service. His rank was now Major.
