Richard LEVESON

Extended Description
his statue is in St Peter's Church, Wolverhampton

Sir Richard LEVESON, Admiral of Lilleshall and Wolverhampton
"Died in London in 1605, is buried here. Sir Richard had been present, as a young man with the small English fleet which defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588; he was appointed Admiral in 1603. The tablet below the statue record his exploits.
The statue once formed part of a very elaborate monument which stood in the Chancel, but was destroyed by Commonwealth soldiers. The ststue itself was rescued by Lady Leveson and kept hidden until after the return of Charles II, when it was replaced in the Chapel. It is by Frenchman Hubert le Suer, Court Sculptor the Charles I, whose equestrian ststue in Whitehall is le Suer's best known work"
