NYMPSFIELD WAR MEMORIAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Located in the village​

This crucifix, shot and broken was found on the battle field of Beugny on the Somme 1917. The men and women of Nympsfield have set it up in their midst to remind them of Gods mercies during the Great War and to beg his blessing on the living and the dead

1914-1918

CLIFFORD Abel Pte 17651, 11th Gloucestershire Regt, suffered illness and died Saturday 6 March 1915. Son of Robert and Edith Alice of Townsend, Nympsfield. Brother of Richard who also fell. At rest in St Bartholomews Churchyard, Nympsfield beside his brother

CLIFFORD Richard Henry Driver 19520, Royal Engineers transferred to the Labour Corps as Pte 437116, died 14/11/1918 age 23. Son of Robert and Alice of Townsend, Nympsfield, brother of Abel who also fell and his buried beside his brother in St Bartholomews churchyard, Nympsfield, Gloucestershire.

CLUNE Laurence Victor Francis. Private 27047, 1st Grenadier Guards died 29 January 1918 aged 19. Foster son of Mary Herbert, of Chapel House, Nymphsfield, near, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. At rest in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.

HOLLOWAY Percy Hubert Pte 203434, 6th Durham Light Infantry, died 2/11/1917 age 19. Son of Benjamin and Elizabeth of The Buildings, Nympsfield. Buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. XV.D.4

SMITH Richard. It may be the following person. Stoker 1st Class K/3074 Richard Edward SMITH Royal Navy on H.M.S. Dartmouth killed in a boiler explosion 15 March 1915. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
He was born about 1892 at Nympsfield, Gloucestershire, son of George Edward and Margaret Louisa Jane , nee Longstreth. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at Malthouse Court Nympsfield, Gloucestershire.

SELBY Edward Francis L/Cpl 202506, A Coy, 8th Gloucestershire Regt, killed 22/9/1918 age 20. Son of Charles and Emily J Selby of Nympsfield. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France

1939-1945

CLIFFORD Ralph Henry. Pilot Officer 33537 Royal Air Force with No 26 Squadron. Killed in action 19 May 1940. Born 16 October 1919 in Wokingham, Berkshire to Peter Burnett Cooper Clifford and Margaret Mary nee Nevile. He resided with his parents at Longwood Farm, Nympsfield, Gloucestershire. Admin and Wills, Ancestry.com - his effects went to his father, Peter, retired farmer and his mother Margaret. His parents were married in 1917 at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. A strange fact - when his father married he used the surname of Cooper.
At rest in Neuvilly Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France. Plot C Grave 13.

Ralph Henry CLIFFORD. Pilot Officer 33537 Royal Air Force of No 26 Squadron, (Army Co-Operation Unit flying a Westland Lysander Mk II serial number N1202 along with Leading Aircraftman, Air Gunner Frederick Lawrence Bettany. The plane was shot down 19 May 1940 by Lieutenant Friedrich Wilhelm Straks Strakeljahn over Neuvilly France. The plane crashed and burned out near Neuvilly at 13:30 hours. Ralph Clifford was killed, Frederick Bettany was very badly burned and he died later in a German Field Hospital at Landrecies.
Ralph Clifford entered No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton January 1936.

KNIGHT John. Pte 5727687, 5th Dorset Regt died 10/7/1944 age 25. Husband of Doris May Knight of Nympsfield. Buried in Banneville-La-Campagny War Cemetery, France. XIV.B.10
