The first B-25s flew in 1938 and were then delivered from February 1941, they were fitted with self-sealing fuel tanks. Later the B-25Bs were fitted with a dorsal and ventral turret but no tail gun.The B-25 leapt into the headlines after the 16th April when 16 flew from the Aircraft Carrier USS Hornet from a position at sea (668 miles) 1075 km from Tokyo.The B-25Bs were then upgraded to the C-D variant that had uprated engines and autopilot, external hard points for one (2000lb) 907kg torpedo or eight (250lb) 113kg bombs. 533 were delivered to the RAF as Mitchell Mk lls to supplement an earlier delivery of 23 Mk l (B-25B)
