Essex Regiment . War Subs. Maj. Herbert G. NICHOLLS (134898) relinquishes his commission 9th Jan. 1949, and is granted the hon. rank of Lt.-Col.

1 July 1941 Strength: 27 officers and 879 men. The KOMR was at Tas Salvatur where the men were under canvas.
In January 1941, HQ was at Mellieha. The officers were: Battalion HQ
Lt Col R Payton Reid – Commanding Officer. 168503 Major 168503 V G Vella – 2nd in Command. Capt H G Nicholls – Adjutant. 2nd Lieutenant 59591 A Stewart – Signals Officer. 2nd Lieutenant 168511 A Podesta – Intelligence Officer and 62150 Surgeon Captain 62150 S F Mattei Royal Malta Artillery.

At rest with his family in Imtarfa Military Cemetery, Malta in Plot 3 Row 4 Grave 7.
