NEWBOLD on STOUR War Memorial

TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919

Lest we forget.​

LABOUCHERE Arthur Maxwell. D.S.O. Major 5th Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry died a prisoner of war 30th April 1918 aged 44. Son of Arthur and Ada of Strood Park, Horsham, Sussex.
(Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at 3 Temple Gardens, Middlesex, Major in His Majesty's Army, died 30th April 1918 in France. His effects went to John Arthur Labouchere, clerk. At rest in St Roch Communal Cemetery, Valenciennes, Nord France.

PAXFORD Thomas Frank. Private 14947, 10 Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died of wounds 25th August 1916. Born at Whimpston and lived at Armscote both of Warwickshire At rest in Baileul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France.

ROUSE Frederick Private 2641, 10th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died of wounds 24th October 1915. Born at Newbold on Stour, enlisted at Stratford-on-Avon. He was the son of Ann who was granted a war gratuity on the 18th January 1916, revised on the 2nd August 1919. At rest in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festebert, France

SOUTHAM Harry. Private 5930, 2/7th Durham Light Infantry. Died 1st February 1917 aged 29. Son of George and Mary Southam;
husband of Kathleen Southam, of The Moors, Newbold-on-Stour. . Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up in the7th September 1916 aged 25 and 5 months, occupation garden labourer. He was living at The Moors with his wife, Sarah Kathleen nee Coldicott who he married on the 24th November 1915 at St David's Church, Newbold on Stour and their child, Aubrey Harry born on the 9th November 1916 at Newbold on Stour. While in training he was taken ill at Andover, Hampshire. He was admitted into 303rd Field Ambulance Reception Hospital, Andover on the 1st February 1917 suffering from acute nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) he died the same day. At rest in St David Churchyard, Newbold on Stour, Warwickshire.

TOMES Sidney Edward. Private PO/16346, Royal Marine Light Infantry on H.M.S. Hyacinth. Born on the 8th April 1894, enlisted on the 20th May 1912 and died 2nd June 1918 as a result of an accident. Son of Edward and Rachel, nee Simpson of Newbold on Stour. His brother Arthur George enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry on the 24th April 1904. At rest in Naval Allotment, Dido Valley Cemetery, Simon's Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

UPTON W It may be the following William, Husband of Mary (now Tanner) of 5 Swinburne Road, Iffley Road, Oxford. who was granted a war gratuity on the 21st October 1918, revised on the 28th November 1919. He was born at Bollington, Chester and lived at Stratford on Avon. He was married in March 1918 at Shipston on Stour to Mary Tappin. He was private 294979, 709th Coy, Labour Corps, formerly 123433, Royal Engineers. Died on wounds on the 16th February 1918. He is at rest in Ham British Cemetery, Muille-Villette, Somme, France.

WORVIELL Alfred Thomas. Private 14948, 11th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Killed in action 16th July 1916. Born at Duns Tew, Oxfordshire in 1881 and lived at Newbold on Avon, Warwickshire. In 1911 he was living with his wife Agnes, nee Freeman, and their three children at Great Alne, Alcester, Warwickshire, occupation, cowman. He was the son of George Henry and Alice, nee Newett.
At rest in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France.

CLEMONS Harry. Private 63200, 27th Machine Gun Corps. Died 9th April 1917. He was born in 1890 at Greddington, Warwickshire and lived at Stratford on Avon. Husband of Patience, (nee Sandells) who was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd August 1917, revised on the 5th November 1919. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his widowed grandmother, Hannah Abbotts at Armscote, Stratford on Avon. He was employed as a farm labourer. It appears that his parents George Abbotts and Annie Clemons did not get married until 1898 at Shipston on Stour. In 1911 his parents and siblings were all living at 26 Montford Street, Bengeworth, Evesham, Worcestershire Both parents were born in the Shipston on Stour, district. At rest in Bailleul Road West Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, France.


1939-1945
BAKER Benjamin Thomas. Military Medal. (WO2) Company Sergeant Major 4033836, 4th King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Died 8th April 1945 aged 36. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Newbold-on-Stour, his effects went to Wilfred Castle Baker, retired bank manager. He served with the Royal Navy in WW1 and survived) At rest in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.

JENKINS David John Frank. D.F.M. Sergeant 923035, 180 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR) died 13th June 1943 aged 23. Son of Mrs A A Jenkins and husband of Ruby nee Hale of Felpham, Sussex. He was married in 1941 at Chichester, Sussex. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Mansils Farm, Armscote, Stratford on Avon. His effects went to Alice Annie Guest, single woman, £1308.9s.9d His wife died on the 20th December 1947 at Aldington Sanatorium, Chester. She lived at Felpham, Sussex. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

LIVINGSTONE J S There is only one J S Scott listed with the CWGC
Private John Scott LIVINGSTONE. WX177759, 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion, Australian Infantry. He died at Prisoner of War in Thailand and died of a Tropical Tumor (as recorded) on the 4th September 1943 He was born in Queenstown County Cork, (now called Cobh) 18th July 1922 to Robert and Ellen May. At some stage they emigrated to Perth Western Australia and were living at 308 William Street, Perth. He was reported missing in action but later changed to prisoner of war in the hands of the Japanese and is at rest in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.

The other possibility could be the following. John George Stanley Joseph LIVINGSTONE. Pilot J/85932, 438 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force. He died in an accident at an airfield in Germany at 20.00hrs on the 14th April 1945 aged 24. He was born on the 1st April 1921 in England to Stanley and Frances Livingstone; husband of Mona Marjorie Livingstone, of Manchester. He left England with his parents Stanley and Edith and sister Annie. They all lived at 6/7 Colman Street, London prior to embarkation to Canada from Southampton on the 17th September 1926 on vessel Walmer Castle.
His Air Force Records show that he joined up on the 10th October 1941 at Montreal and he lived at 5198 St, Denis, Montreal, with his parents. Occupation mechanical engineer and could speak French fluently. His father, Stanley of the same address was his next of kin.
He was promoted to Sergeant Pilot from Leading Aircraftsman R/135121 on the 20th November 1942, Flight Sergeant on the 20th May 1943, WO2 on the 20th November 1943. Discharged from the air force on the 15th March 1944, and was appointed to a commission on the 29th April 1944 as J/85932. He was killed in an accident at the airfield after air operations which was dive bombing railway lines over Germany. The accident report by Squadron Leader J R Beirnes stated that he entered the circuit and apparently his speed was to low as he flicked into a spin., prior to the spin he was already on his back. His body was recovered from wreckage and was identified by his serial number. His Will was made out his wife, Mrs Mona M Livingstone of 114 Kings Road,Alexandria Park, Manchester, formerly of Howick, Beechcroft Road, Alverstoke, Gosport Hampshire. He is at rest in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.

MUMFORD Reginald Arthur. Gunner 170 339 Battery, 59th Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died between 19th and 20th November 1940 aged 33. Son of Charles Mumford and of Emma Mumford, of Newbold-on-Stour. At rest in St David Churchyard, Newbold on Stour, Warwickshire

ROUSE Leonard John. Sergeant 5102620, 2, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died between 6 and 7th June 1944 aged 27. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rouse, of Newbold-on-Stour, Warwickshire; husband of Mabel A. Rouse, (nee Batchelor) of Newbold-on-Stour. Commemorated on the Bayeux, Memorial, Calvados, France.

STANLEY Jesse George. Sergeant 581359, 18 Squadron, Royal Air Force died 4th July 1940 aged 24. Son of Albert and Amy Eleanor Stanley, of Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

WORVILLE Frederick Charles. Private 5116710, 1st Black Watch, Royal Highlanders. Died 21st July 1944 aged 29. Son of Agnes Freeman pf Armscote, near Newbold on Stour. At rest in St David Churchyard, Newbold on Stour, Warwickshire
