Murdo MACAULEY (McAuley)

MACAULAY Murdo . (Memorial states McAulay) Driver, 4401, Ross Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, died of his wounds 15th July 1915, aged 21 years. Son of Christina MacKay who was granted a war gratuity 3rd February 1916. His uncle John was granted a war gratuity on the 6th September 1916. His father was John Macaulay. Greatly missed by his mother and all friends who knew him, Keith Street .Stornoway.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up 19th March 1915 and was posted the Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery aged 20 years and he lived at 2 Keith Street, Stonoway, Scotland. Prior employment, postman with Stornoway Post Office. Embodied service on the 5th August 1914. On the 19th March. He embarked from Avonmouth on the 19th March 1915 for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. On the 12th June 1915 he received a bullet wound (slight) to his left calf at Gallipoli. At some stage he was invalided to a hospital in Malta where he had his left leg amputated. He died in hospital from wounds on the 15th July 1915.
