Then came the M91/24. When fascists took over, they had grand plans but few lira available to implement them. Sorely needed were more arms, but they simply couldn't be afforded. But! Italian arsenals contained quantities of worn out M91 long rifles. These had the stock cut down. The worn barrel was amputated, and a new, shorter barrel was brazed in place. Around a quarter million useless rifles were returned to service in this manner.
