Private 241425, Martin Frear METCALFE, 5th Border Regiment died 12th December 1920 aged 27. He was the husband of Kate Violet Metcalf of 3, Church Hill, Arnside. He is at rest in Arnside Cemetery, Westmorland. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 23rd November 1915 aged 22 yrs and 2 months. He lived at Meadow Bank, Arnside and was employed by the Furness Railway Company, Barrow in Furness as a Railway Clerk. He gave his sister Sarah Ann as his next of kin and gave his parents as Thomas and Sarah of Arnside. He was posted to France on the 13th July 1916 to the 4th October 1916. In England from the 5th October 1917 to the 9th June 1917. 4th April 1917 he was admitted to Dysentery Convalescent Hospital, Barton on Sea, New Milton, Hants with dysentery. He returned back to France on the 10th June 1917. There are some dates missing because on the 23rd February 1918 he got married to Kate Violet Wall at Arnside Church. On the 21st March 1918 he was reported missing in action. He was captured by the Germans on that day at some quarry (I can not make out the location) and was a prisoner of war in Hamburg, Germany and was repatriated after the end of hostilities, suffering from dysentery. He was discharged from the army on the 26th January 1919 from the Dispersal Centre, Heaton Park, Hull and transferred to the Army reserve on the 23rd February 1919 On the 12th December 1920 he died from (1) General Sepsis which he had while he was a P.O.W., (2) Myocarditis and Cardiac Dilation for six months prior to his demise. His brother, Marmaduke, served as Sapper 160629 Royal Engineers. He lived with his wife Beatrice at 25, Woodland Road, Windermere. His unit was 581 (H) Fortress Works Coy. He joined up on the 14th April 1916, Fought in France from the 16th October 1916 to February 1918. He suffered from rheumatism in the shoulder in October 1917 from exposure. Admitted to Weir Hospital, Balham, and 4th London General Hospital, Demark Hill, London from the 6th April 1918 to the 23rd July 1918 when he was medically discharged from the army.
