Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 27th June 1916 and was posted to Clandeboye Army Camp, aged 35. His occupation prior to enlistment was a traction engine driver and he was living with his wife and children at 6, Methuen Street, Belfast. He married Margaret nee Sherrard on the 12th June 1903 at St Mary's Church, Fulham. He had previously served as Private 193 Irish Guards. At some stage he was posted to 52nd Company Army Service Corps at Thornhill Camp Stanhope Lines, Aldershot, Hampshire. He was found dead at the camp with his throat cut. A razor was found in his hand and it was concluded that he had committed suicide whilst temporary insane . He appeared to have been dead for a couple of days.
He left a widow and six children. Thomas James born in Aberdeen 4th October 1903, The following were born in Belfast. Maria Annie 14th July 1907, Louisa, 18th September 1909, William 19th April 1911, Richard 4th June 1916 and Samuel Allen born 22nd January 1916, he died later that year
