Captain Meredith Andre Chawner, 2nd Essex Regiment, was killed in action on 21 May 1917 (Plot A.2.) His father, Major William John Hampden Chawner, served in Malta and in India wher Meredith and his elder brother, Lieutenant Alain Percy Mary Chawner were born. Both brothers served with the Essex Regiment. Alain who had been mentioned in despatched, was killed in action 21 October 1916 while attached to the 1st Battalion from the 3rd Battalion. He had initially served with the East Surrey Regiment and is buried on the Somme at Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban.

His medal card shows he was a Private 6988 serving with 7th Canadian Infantry. 2nd and 1st Lieutenant with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Served in Salonica December 1915 and Macedonia 15 January 1914
