This tomb at last offers repose and a termination of sufferings to Major (John) RUTTER, Royal Marine Artillery who after undergoing a variety of troubles was here received into its friendly bosom on 6.2.1904 (6th February 1904) aged 63
Erected to his loving memory by his desolate wife, Margaret, and his afflicted children. William, Henry, and Mary Josephine. At rest in Ta Braxia Cemetery, Malta.

John RUTTER, joined the Royal Malta Fencible Regiment as an Ensign on 4th February 1859, and became a Lieutenant when the Regiment changed its title on 25th January 1861. Promotion to Captain on 5th September 1877 in the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery and Major on 10th November 1885. He retired on 12th October 1892.
