Walter Baumhofer was born on November 1, 1904 in Brooklyn. His parents, Maria and Henry Baumhofer, were German immigrants. They had two sons, Richard and Walter. They lived at 92 Ralph Avenue. My father was a clerk at a local coffee company. In 1918, his father lost his job and could only get a job as a janitor at 1498 Bushwick Avenue , where the family was able to live without rent. When the tenants needed a plumber, they hired one local, George Gould , who lived two houses in 1502 Bushwick Avenue. Son of a plumber 12 year old John Fleming Gould (John Fleming Gould), with tal best friend Walter. They went to school together. In 1919 and x life has changed dramatically in one day, when they found a box of ammunition, a relic of the Great War. Walter accidentally blew up the three fingers of his left hand . According to Gould, "until then, Walt was a musician, and I am an artist, but after the accident I suggested that he become an artist. What else could he do with only one hand!" The accident left Baumhofer unfit for manual labor, so he began to seriously pursue a career as an artist.
After graduating from high school in 1922, they both entered the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (Pratt Institute in Brooklyn), where they studied with Dean Cornwell (Dean Cornwell) and Winfield Scott (H. Winfield Scott).
