9th MEB M48 tank of the 3rd Tank Bn, serving in support of the men of 2nd Bn, 4th Marines, lets loose with its 90mm cannon on a search and destroy mission, just south of the Demilitarized Zone, Vietnam, 13 February 1968 http://militarymashup.com/search/m-48
I saw what appeared to be smoke & thought they might have popped a tear gas grenade. I now see in the remarks they weren't near a village.
When tanks would stop along Rt 9 at Cam Lo, little kids would quickly climb on to see what they could mooch or what might not be tied down well. If the kids got too bold, tankers often popped a tear gas grenade, set it on the turret to burn down and buttoned up. Which got rid of the kids... and had us grabbing for a gas mask when the cloud drifted our way.
