Erected by the employees in the Locomotive Department London & North Western Railway, Abergavenny and Sub-Station in memory of their fellow workmen who lost their lives in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918

BOOTH. Charles James. Lance Corporal WR/175189. 1/1st Cheshire Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died from illness contracted whilst abroad 10th September 1919, age 39. . Awarded the Territorial Efficiency Medal. Son of Charles and Charlotte Booth, of Abergavenny, husband of Harriet Booth (nee Jones), of 97 North Street, Abergavenny. Locomotive Department L & NW Railway, Abergavenny and Sub-Station. At rest in Abergavenny New Cemetery, Monmouthshire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 26th March 1909 at Abergavenny and was posted as to the 3rd South Wales Borderers. He had formerly served with the 4th Volunteer Battalion, S.W.B. It shows that he just did his annual training and not served overseas. On the 5th August 1914 embodied service he joined the Monmouth Regiment as Private 769. and posted to the 2/3rd Monmouth Regiment. He was living (1914) at 97, North Street, Abergavenny. After his training he was posted to France on the 22nd July 1916 where he was posted to the 13/3rd Monmouth Regiment. Whilst in France he was transferred on the 28th August 1916 under A.O. 204 of 1916 as Sapper 198493 to the 1/1st Cheshire Field Company, Royal Engineers, Territorial Force. He was classed as a skilled engine driver, the following day he was promoted to Lance Corporal. While in France he fell ill in January 1918. He was coughing up sputum with blood in it. He was admitted to the 35th General Hospital, Calais, transferred on the 2nd November 1918 to the Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, London suffering from Phthisis (Tuberculosis) On the 8th January 1919 he was on a medical board at this hospital where he was discharged under Para 392 (XVI) King's Regulation. Physically unfit for war service. On the 10th September 1919 he died of his illness. He left a widow, Harriet, nee Jones, and children, Veda, born 1901, Charles, born 1904, Ethel, born 1906 and Rhoda, born 1907. In 1911 he was living with his family at 66, Skirrid View Park Street, Abergavenny, occupation, bricklayer. His parents were Charles and Charlotte Ann, nee Tiley.

BOWDEN, Herbert James G. Private 49704, 2nd Welsh Regiment . Killed on active service, (memorial has France) 9th November 1917. He was the son of William Charles and Mary Ann of 20, Princess Street, Abergavenny. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. West- Vlaanderen, Belgium.

BEDFORD, John Arthur Charles. Private 49702. 1/5th Welsh Regiment. Killed in action 3rd November 1917, age 19 in Palestine. Son of George and Catherine Sophia of Lyrewen Cottage, Llwyndu, Abergavenny. At rest in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza)

EVANS, Gus Trevor. Private 4/12902.4th South Wales Borderers Died on active service, Mesopotamia on the 15th June 1916 of Cholera. Son of William and Sarah of 23, Trinity Street, Abergavenny, occupation (1911) labourer. At rest Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.

FITZPATRICK, Norbert. Private 1654, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, killed in active service 19th May 1915 age 20 at Frezenberg, Ypres Salient. Son of John F and Hannah Fitzpatrick, of 37, Cae-Pen-y-Dre, Abergavenny. Monmouthshire. Native of Bridgend, Mon. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

GIBBONS ,Reginald Charles. Ordinary Seaman J/71872, Royal Navy, HMS Contest. Drowned at sea 18th September 1917, age 18. Son of John and Ellen Gibbons, of 71 Union Road, Abergavenny. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

JONES, Reginald Thomas. Private 290227, A Company, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, reported missing (in France), presumed dead ( killed in action) on the 5th May 1915, age 19. Ypres Son Charles and Sarah Jones, of 2, Albert Place, Princes Street, Abergavenny. (UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929, have place of death as France) Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

KNIGHT, Arthur Christopher. Lance Sergeant, 36831, 19th Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 2703, Monmouthshire Regiment, died of wounds on the 28th November 1917, age 33. Son of James and Ann Knight, of Llanarth, Abergavenny, husband of Mary Ellen Knight, of 57, Tudor Street, Abergavenny. Monmouthshire. Commemorated on the Etaples Military Cemetery. France

MORGAN, Oscar John. Private 2192, B Company, 1/1st Herefordshire Regiment, died of exposure in Gallipoli on 29/11/1915, age 24. Son Mordecai and Mary Jane , nee David, husband of Gertrude Lucy, nee Powell, of 69 Widemarsh Street, Hereford. Lala Baba Cemetery, Turkey (including Gallipoli)

NORGROVE, Edward Clarence, Private 1522, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, killed on active service on the 2nd May 1915, age 19. Son of Alfred William and Maria Magdelene Norgrove, of 1, Stanhope Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

SPILSBURY, Herbert John Sergeant 290432, 1/2nd Monmouthshire Regiment, formerly 2277 of the same regiment. died on active service on the 2nd December 1917 aged 28 and 1 month in France . Joined (Embodied)on the 3rd September 1914 at Abergavenny, previously served with the 4th Volunteer Battalion, South Wales Borderers, for three years, and 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment also for three years. Posted to France on the 8th October 1917 and joined the 2nd Monmouth Regiment, 29th Division, B.E.F. Born at Roseville, Dudley, Staffordshire, son of Frederick and s Annie Spilsbury, of 13, Prince's Street , Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, husband of Mary Harriet , nee Owen, of 54, James Street, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. His occupation prior to enlistment was a fireman, with the L & NW Railway at Tredegar. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Nord France. SAVEGAR, Charles Leopold. Private 1536. A Company 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment. missing, presumed killed in France on the 8th May 1915, age 18. Son of George and Alice Savegar of 8 Asylum Terrace, Firs Road, Abergavenny , Monmouthshire. Occupation in 1911, assistant baker. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

TAYLOR, H J. Died of wounds, France. This person is a bit of a mystery. Records relating to the London and North Western Railway Company, WW1 Roll of Honour show only Taylor, H.J. Locomotive cleaner, Abergavenny, and was a Private in the army. The above roll of honour can be seen in St James Church, Tebay, Cumbria, England. The National Archives at Kew and Ancestry show details of Private 1657, H J TAYLOR, Monmouthshire Regiment. Ancestry show two medal cards for Private 1657 Taylor, H.J. this one refers H.G.Taylor of the same regiment.
The following information is from the CWGC. Taylor, Henry George Private 1657, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, Died of wounds on the 29th December 1915,age 18. Son of Samuel Bradley and Rose Hannah Taylor, of Old Forge, Llangattock Lingoed, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. No, 1901 and 1911 census record can be found for him or his parents. At rest Ferme-Olivier Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

WHITE, Albert Ivor. Sergeant 2067, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, killed on active service on the 2nd May 1915 aged 31. Son of Joseph and Mary, of Gordon Place, Park Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at 73, Park Street, Abergavenny, died in France with the 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment. His effects went to his brother, Joseph Harris White, painter. In 1911 he was employed as a railway engine stoker.
Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

WEBB, Albert. Private 2886, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment, Killed in action on the 9th July 1916. Son of George. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

WATKINS, Walter David . Private 24389, 16th Welsh Regiment, died on active service, France on the 7th July 1916. Born in 1882 to David and Alice of (1901) 2, Waterloo Terrace, Pontlottyn, St Tyfaelog, Glamorgan. Employed at Blaenavon railway station as a locomotive cleaner, husband of Harriet nee Moor who he married in 1915 at Cardiff. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

DAVIES, Ivor Ernest Charles, Sergeant 4076896 (Sgt Major on the memorial) 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment killed in action on the 22nd September 1944, aged 27. At rest in Mook War Cemetery, Limburg, Netherlands.

HILL, William Walter, Sergeant, Air Gunner, 1412570. 100 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR)died on operational flight on the 29th June 1943 aged 22 . Son of James and Mary Ann nee Miller of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. At rest in Woensel General Cemetery, Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
