Leonard BERRISFORD. Born 1st March 1895 to Isaac and Louisa Berrisford of Shaws Farm, Tissington, Derbyshire. Killed in action 1st March 1917 aged 22 (as inscribed on his memorial)

Commemorated on his father’s memorial at St Michael and All Angles churchyard, Tissington, Derbyshire.

L BERESFORD . Private 15151 11th Royal Sussex Regiment died 28th February 1917. At rest in Transport Farm, Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Following extracted from the De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour, Ancestry

Leonard Berrisford. Private 44216, 11th Service Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment son of the late Isaac Berisford, by his wife, Louisa (Shaw’s Farm, Tissington, near Ashbourne) daughter of Thomas and Mary Brown. Born at Ashover Hay, 1st March 1895, was a farmer. Enlisted in the 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion the Prince of Wales Own North Staffordshire Regiment 27th April 1916 from which he was transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment. Served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 26th August and was killed in action at Ypres 1st March 1917. Buried in Transport Farm , Railway Dug-outs Burial Ground, Zillebeke one and half miles south-south-east of Ypres. His sergeant wrote: He was respected by all in his company and also by his officers. I can assure you we grieve his loss very much and feel as though we had lost a brother. He was a brave lad and died at his post. No 3 Platoon will miss him very much. He was so well liked by all who knew him.
