L6/40, Italian, light tank, WW2

Even by period Italian standards, the L6/40 was not a satisfactory design. Chief among its deficiencies was chronic torsion bar failure and transmission problems. There was a two man crew; commander/gunner for the Breda 20mm and a driver.

Around 440 of this model were made. Of the 55 sent to Russia, none returned. German troops seized all available examples when the Italian king surrendered in 1943. Another 15 were made for German use. These went to the Balkans for anti-partisan use. Most of those were used by German police units, but a few went to the Luftwaffe for base defense. The RSI also had a small number - also for anti-partisan use.

The few in service when the war ended were issued to Italian police - presumable for riot control (?). They remained in service into the 1950s.
