L159 MATTHEW WILLIAM SLATER. Engineman 2157TS Royal Navy Reserve on HM Trawler, Coningsby. Born 16th December 1877 at South Shields, Durham to Thomas and Catherine Dockway Slater, nee Hewison. 1881 residing with his parents and siblings at Walkers Building, Westoe, Durham. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Slater, nee Johnson. Enlisted 26 January 1915, his residence at the time of enlistment was 110 St John William Street, South Shields. Killed at Hydraulic Dock, Msida, Malta, from fracture of base of skull and drowning on the 13th November 1918 aged 41 years. His son William Johnson of 85 Victoria Street, South Shields was informed of his death.
