In memory of the Officers and Men of the 1st Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles who lost their lives in Korea and especially those who were killed near this place on the 3rd and 4th January 1951
The plaque on the front of the plinth reads as follows:
Men from many parts of the British Isles, but predominantly from every community and part of Ireland fought with the RUR in the Happy Valley battle in defence of Seoul capital of South Korea.
The memorial above was carved by a Korean mason during the succeeding battles before being erected on 3 July 1951 overlooking the battlefield.
As Seoul expanded the memorial had to be moved and was repatriated to the depot of the Royal Ulster Rifles at St Patricks Barracks, Ballymena.
It was moved to this final resting place on 24 May 2008 with the gracious permission of Belfast City Council.
This relocation was made possible by generous donations from the regiments and veterans who fought in the battle, individuals, trusts, the Korean government and Samsung Electronics.

On 26th March 1944 Private Brown was one of a patrol of No 41 Column recce platoon sent out to locate a Japanese post known to be approaching the airstrip at Broadway. At 05 30 Hrs on 27th March 1944 the patrol found the enemy in harbour, the patrol entered the enemy harbour and shot it up and dispersed. Private Brown hid in some tall grass and observed the enemy. When he eventually tried to withdraw he was attacked by three Japs who shot him in the hand, bayoneted him twice in the chest and struck him with rifle butts until stopped by a Japanese interpreter. Private Brown was then questioned and told he would have to lead the Japs to the guns at Broadway. He was tied up and all his clothes, except his trousers, were taken from him. With his arms still bound he led the Japs to Broadway arriving at around 23 00. Instead of taking them by the covered approach he took them out into the airstrip in front of the bunkers, knowing his action would result in fire being directed at him as well as the enemy. A Bren gun opened fire and wounded Private Brown above the left eye and at the same time killing the three Japs behind him. He then ran in to the middle of the strip where he was found the next morning by troops at Broadway.
