Marble Tablet which was originally on the memorial is now attached to the Memorial Building inside a glass covered frame,
This hospital was founded in the memory of the gallant Men from Knutsford and surrounding district who gave their lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914-1918. Their name are recorded on the tablet in this hall.

AINSCOE William, Private 15610, 12th Cheshire Regiment. He died on the 31st March 1918 aged 25. He was the son of Martha Ellen Perrin, formerly Ainscoe of 9, Minshull Street, Knutsford, Cheshire and the late Samuel. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire and he is at rest in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.

ALCOCK Wilfred Cecil, Cadet 74783, Royal Flying Corps died 24th November 1917. he was the son of Frederick of Caxton House, King Street, Knutsford, Cheshire. He is at rest in Oak Grove Cemetery, New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States of America

ALLEN William Frederick of Oak Legh, Mobberley Road, Knutsford, Cheshire 2nd Lieutenant 3rd East Lancashire Regiment died the 9th October 1917 in Belgium aged 24. He was the son of Frederica Fanny Crofton, formerly Allen of The Red House, Thelwall, Warrington. He was born in Bermuda and his father was called William. His parents were married at Medway, Kent in 1891. He is at rest in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium

ATKINSON Albert, Pioneer 37837, 21st Signal Coy, Royal Engineers died 28th May 1918. He was born in Knutsford and is at rest in Hermonville Military Cemetery, Marne, France

BAINBRIGGE (Memorial has BAINBRIDGE) William Edward , Private 6012 1st Dragoon Guards killed in action 13th May 1915 aged 40. He was born at Marston, Northwich Cheshire, lived in Knutsford, and enlisted at Richmond, Yorkshire. He was the son of William Frederick and Louisa of Wharton, Cheshire. In 1911 his mother now widowd was living at 65, Swallow Lane, Winsford, Cheshire. William for the same year is now married. He was married Miss Martha Ann Dunning on the 10th April 1901 and were living with their four children at 20, Stanley Road, Knutsford. He was working as a Chauffeur possibly Lord of the Manner or such like. On the 19th May 1914 his wife died, leaving him with four children. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 26th August 1914 aged 39 years and 7 months occupation Motor Mechanic and living at 18, Stanley Road, Knutsford as Private 6012 William Henry Bainbrigge of the Dragoon Guards. He had previously served with the Royal Marine Light Infantry. There is a date of 6th September 1899. Not sure if enlistment or when he bought himself out of the service. His next of kin was his brother in law. Jams Atherton of School Road, Wharton, Winsford, Cheshire. He was posted to France on the 19th December 1914 and posted to the front on the 25th April 1915. The 13th May 1915 he was reported missing, believed killed near Ypres.. The guardian of his children was his sister in law Mrs Margaret Read of 79, Great Street, West Gorton, Manchester. His children, Doris born 16th March 1903 at Northwood, Elsie, born 7th June 1905, Jack, born 5th July 1907 and Kathleen, born 10th November 1909 all born at Knutsford and all living at 79, Great Street.. All his army records and signatures are William Henry Bainbrigge, but he was married using his birth names of William Edward Bainbrigge. The family surname was Bainbrigge

BARONIAN Haron, Private 33006, 8th Cheshire Regiment died 11th April 1917 aged 21. He was the son of Zarch and Shushan Baronian, of Brae Cottage, Legh Road, Knutsford, Cheshire. Cadet of Manchester University Officer Training Corps. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq

BARRY Nathaniel James Merriman, Captain, General List attached to the East African Transport Corps died 21st October 1917 aged 34. He was the son of Sir Jacob and Lady Barry husband of Marian Boyd Barry, of The Lodge, Overbury, Tewkesbury, England. A Farmer of "Rustenberg", Naivasha, British East Africa. Born in Cape Province, South Africa. He is at rest in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.

BEBBINGTON George Arthur, Lance Corporal 21446, 19th Liverpool Regiment died 30th July 1916 aged 31. He was the son of G W and Alice S of 26, Bexton Road, Knutsford, He is at rest in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France

BERRY Arthur John, Military Medal. (Memorials has Arthur) 8874, A Coy, 1/6th Manchester Regiment killed in action 22nd April 1918 aged 23. He was the son of Mrs J Berry of 8, Green Street, Knutsford. BIRKENHEAD George James, Private 1783, 1st Lancashire Fusiliers killed in action at Gallipoli on the 2nd May 1915 aged 25. He was the son of Peter Kinsey and Mary Ann Birkenhead of Knutsford. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey and Gallipoli.

On leave from the Depot on the 26th October 1914. On the 7th November he was transferred to the Signal Company, Royal Engineers, 24th October 1915 he was transferred to Fenny Stratford Signals Depot. MACDONALD (memorial has Keith) Ronald Francis Keith, Private 767182 1/28th Artists Rifles, London Regiment died 25th December 1917 aged 25 He was the son of A Le Clare and Kathleen Clayton Macdonald of Hartshill, Mooragh, Ramsey, Isle of Man, and husband of Mary Revenscroft, formerly Macdonald of 86, Burford Lane, Lymm, Warrington. He is at rest in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire. Some noted from what remains of his army record. He originally joined up 1914/1915 in Ireland and due to a gunshot wound to his stomach in 1915. He left the army in Dublin, rejoined the army in O.T.C.on the 23rd October 1917 aged 25 years and 6 months and he lived at 67, Gower Street, London W.C.1 He married Mary Wildgoose on the 27th September 1917 at Knutsford. and he was living at "Hartwood", Garden Road, Knutsford. On the 10th December 1917 he was admitted to the 3rd, London General Hospital, Wandsworth suffering from the gunshot wound to his abdomen which he received in 1915 at Gallipoli. On the 25th December 1917 he died of his wound at 2.55am. He had a gangrenous bowel due to adhesion and heart failure. He was originally from Naas, Country Kildare, Ireland and he was employed as a clerk

He was called to the colours on the 5th March 1915 and sent to Depot. He was then posted to the 1st Battalion. He embarked for France on the 5th of January 1915, posted the 4th Battalion on the 1st April 1915. He was in France from the 5th January 1915 to 30th March, then ?? possible on leave. He was back in France on the 1st April 1915 and he died of wounds on the 8th May 1915. His notes showed that he was killed in action, then changed to died of wounds. His brother, James, in 1919 was in the War Hospital at Selby, Yorkshire

On the 13th September 1912 he and his brother William Mossop left London on passenger ship 'Otway' bound for Sydney Australia, He was a clerk aged 21 his brother a teacher aged 22. He was posted into the 7th Reinforcements 4th Battalion at Liverpool, New South Wales. He had previously served 3 years in the Rifle Corps, Secondary School He gave his place of birth as Gosforth,England and his address in England as Stanley Road, Knutsford and was working as a clerk. He attended the Knutsford Egerton School and Knutsford Grammar School,. He was living with his brother who was his next of kin at Kulmusa, Tattanalong New South Wales as an Orchardist, fruit farming. On the 16th August 1915 he joined his unit at Gallipoli and was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 25th August 1915. He was laid to rest along with others at Isolated Graves, Anzac (location) Foot of W, slope of Damakqilik Bair near Damakqilik Kuyu and 2 as five eights miles S.E. of Lala Baba, Gallipoli. His remains are to be re-interred in the nearest military cemetery.

He was born at Mobberley and was the son of Frederick William and Elizabeth nee Simcock of Station Cottage, Mobberley. His father worked for the railway. Lionel was employed as a clerk, . He is at rest in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France Some notes for what remains of his army Record. He joined up on the 3rd September 1914 and posted as Private 15890 to the 10th Cheshire Regiment aged 21 years and 1 month, occupation, clerk. On the 8th January 1915 he embarked Folkestone for France. On the 8th March 1915 he was transferred to the 17, Manchester Regiment and allotted a new number, 17/9510. Between the 1st and 2nd July 1916 he was wounded in action at Montauban. He was found and admitted to 45 Casualty Clearing Station on the 3rd July with a gunshot wound to his right leg, He died from his injury the next day, 4th at 45, C.C.S.

BRACEGIRDLE Gilbert John, Sergeant 43696, 199th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 6th February 1917 aged 23. He was the son of John and Blanche of Barnshaw Cottage, Mobberley. He is at rest in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 28th August 1914 at Altrincham. aged 20 years, living at 135 Ashley Road, Hale, Cheshire and was employed as a nurseryman. On the 4th November 1915 he was posted to 14th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery at Gallipoli from No 2 Depot, Gosport He was admitted to hospital at Gallipoli suffering from diarrhoea on the 11th November 1915, the same day he was admitted into Main Dressing Station, 1/3rd East Lancs Field Ambulance, Gallipoli. He was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship, Dunvegan on the 13th November 1915. On the 19th November he was admitted into St Andrew's Hospital, Malta. The 3rd December 1915 he was invalided to England on Hospital Ship, Regina d'Italia. After some time he was discharged fit for war service and on the 15th November 1916 he embarked Southampton and disembarked at Harve the next day 16th. He was then posted to 199th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. On the 6th February he was accidentally wounded in France and he was treated at 89 Field Ambulance, but died of his injury the same day. Unfortunately the Court of Enquiry Report into his injury did not survive the bombing over London in WW2

BURGESS John Arthur, Private 27609, 3rd Cheshire Regiment, died at sea on the 4th May 1917 while on board S S Transylvania. The ship was torpedoed and sunk on the 4th May by U-Boat 63 while carrying Allied troops to Egypt 412 lost their lives.. He was born in Mobberley and was the son of John and Elizabeth of 11, New Street, Wilmslow, Manchester. In 1911 he was living with his parents at Paddock Hill, Mobberley. He is commemorated on the Savona Memorial, Italy

EDEN William Private 35732, 14th Cheshire Regiment died 5th May 1916 at Whitchurch, Shropshire aged 29. He was born at Mobberley, and lived the Bulls Head Inn, Mobberley with his mother, Nancy in 1911 who was the publican, he was a joiner. he later became the Inn Keeper, his father was called George. He is at rest in Whitchurch Cemetery, Shropshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 10th December 1915 aged 28 years and 11 months, occupation, publican of the Bulls Head, Mobberley. He was called to the colours on the 29th January 1916 and posted to the Depot. His cousin George Edward Willett of Town Lane, Mobberley was his next of kin. On the 8th March 1916 he was admitted into Prees Heath Military Hospital, Shropshire and on the 5th May 1916 at 12-35pm he died of Tubercle of the Lung (TB) (Death Cert has Acute Pthisis and Cardiac Failure) Auth, I have save a copy, which will be posted with the memorial.

GOTT William Private 46323, 8th Royal Welsh Fusiliers died 16th February 1917. He was born at Mobberley and he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. He was by occupation a teamsman on a farm (working with horses) and lived at Bollin House, Mobberley On the 9th July 1915 he married Elsie Harrison at St Peter's Church (unable to make out what area in Cheshire) he was then living at 1,Bakerhouse Yard, Knutsford. He embarked Davenport on the 11th October 1916 and disembarked at Basra on the 17th November 1916. He left a widow and on child. William, born 23 October 1915, Elsie Rene born 19th December 1916 but died on the 1st January 1917 at 1, St John Street, Altrincham, Cheshire

GREAR Brothers. Only one is commemorated on this memorial, William. Mr and Mrs Grear had 5 sons who all fought for the cause. Two were killed in action and one died soon after returning from France. see below

GREAR William. (M.M.) Lance Corporal 2181, 45th Australian Infantry died of wounds on the 14th October 1917 aged 27. He was the son of John and Alice of Mobberley. In 1911 his mother was a widow and she was living at 41, Moss Road, Urmston, Lancashire He left Mobberley England via London on the 23rd June 1911 with his brother, James bound for Sydney, Australia on passenger ship Omrah. His widowed mother, Alice and 6 siblings later joined him and his brother from Mobberley, Cheshire. They were living at "Brighton Villa" Station Road, then Wimberton Grange, and Mittagong Road all in Bowral, New South Wales. Some notes from his army record. The information about addresses in New South Wales was taken for his army record. he joined up 23rd July 1916 into 4th Rifles, 45th Battalion, L Coy, 45th Depot, Bathurst, N.S.W. he gave his occupation as a farmer. His mother, Alice, who was now living in N.S.W as his next of kin On the 28th August 1916 he embarked Sydney bound for Plymouth, England, where he disembarked on the 13th October 1916. and sent to No 3 Com Depot, Woolwich to 12th Training Battalion. On the 8th January 1917 he embarked Folkestone on Princess Henrietta and disembarked the same day ay Etaples and was taken on strength of the 45th Battalion in the field on the 18th January 1917. He was wounded many times and survived (See records) On the 13th October 1917 he was accidentally shot in the right thigh, left leg and arm. He was admitted to No 3 Australian Field Ambulance and transferred the same day to No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium where he died of his wounds the next day, 14th He was awarded the Military Medal in the field on the 17th March 1917. His mother at this time was living at Mittagong Road, Bowral. She had five sons at the front, one killed at Gallipoli, three in France and on in the British Nay who fought in the battle of Jutland. She has requested that when she receives her son's Military Medal she would like to have it handed to her in public in Sydney as it may stimulate recruiting. She has given all her sons (5) and her only two sons-in-law for the cause. He is at rest in Lifssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Action for which recommended. "For gallant conduct during an attack upon German Strong Point and trench at Gueudecourt on the morning of 21/2/17. The assault was delivered under a barrage of Stokes Guns. The position was protected by a strong wire and before the Stokes had finished firing Pte.Grear dashed forward with Sgt Clare and laid blankets across the wire to facilitate the progress of the storming party. He then returned for more blankets which he placed in position. Subsequently he rendered valuable assistance in the operations along the trench".

Some notes from his army record
He enlisted on the 14th September 1914 aged 22 years, occupation Farmer and was living with his mother, Alice at Wimberton Grange, Bowral. He was killed in action at the landing at the Dardanelles, Gallipoli on the 10th May 1915 with b Company, 1st Infantry Brigade, Australian Imperial Force. He had originally been reported as wounded in action at Gallipoli on the 25th February 1915 and died of his wounds the same day1st Casualty Clearing Station, Anzac . His record was corrected and he was killed in action between the 1st and 4th May 1915 (no reason given for the mix up of dates) He was laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery, Anzac officiated by Chaplin Green. Unfortunately his grave could not be identified for a memorial to be placed by the Imperial War Graves Commission now the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. His mother was living at Mittagong Road, Bowral, New South Wales. His brother Charles Wilfred Grear of 254, Willarong Road, Caringbah, South was now looking after his affairs.

The other brothers survived the war, but one died after returning from France and that was Harry.

He was married to A.P Grear and were living at The Boulevard, Stratfield, New South Wales. He joined up on the 19th January 1916 at Marrick Ville, New South Wales as Gunner 18466, 25th Battalion, Field Artillery Brigade, 3rd Divison, 1st Australian Imperial Force. He was by occupation a commercial traveller and was born in Mobberley, Cheshire he embarked for France on the 11th May 1916. He was wounded several times but was discharged from hospital fit for duty. In France he went sick with laryngitis and on the 18th November 1917 he was admitted into Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, England with severe laryngitis He was now serving with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade He rejoined his unit in France from hospital on the 7th March 1918 He left France with his unit via Harve on the 2nd April 1919 and disembarked at Southampton on the 3rd April 1919 He embarked England on 28th June 1919 on ship Borda and disembarked at Sydney Australia on the 14th August 1919, and was discharged from the A.I.F., he died some time later. The cause of death was not recorded in his army record

He left France with his unit via Harve on the 2nd April 1919 and disembarked at Southampton on the 3rd April 1919 He embarked England on 28th June 1919 on ship Borda and disembarked at Sydney Australia on the 14th August 1919, and was discharged from the A.I.F.

The last brother, John, was serving in the British Navy as Stoker SS106648 who in 1911 was on Torpedo Boat No115 Sheerness, Kent. he was born 26th February 1886

HATTON Henry Private 27613, 13th Cheshire Regiment died 19th July 1916 aged 28. He was the son of Henry and Hannah. He was born at Mobberley. He is at rest in SS, Wilfred and Mary churchyard, Mobberley, Cheshire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 17th August 1915, Gave his home address as Moss Lane, Mobberley was a farm labourer and was aged 27 years and 10 months. His father, Henry was his next of kin and he lived at Moss Lane. He embarked for France on the 4th and disembarking on the 5th March 1916 with the 1st Cheshire Regiment. He was admitted to No12 General Hospital with scabies, discharged on the 7th April 1916 to 5th Infantry Base depot and was posted to the 9th Entrenching Battalion on the 23rd April 1916. On the 16th May 1916 he was posted to the 13th Cheshire Regiment. On the 7th July 1916 he was wounded in the field. he received a gunshot wound to left leg, smashing his femur. He was admitted to No 38 Casualty Clearing Station On the 9th he was admitted to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Cambria on the 18th July 1916. He was admitted the same day to East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital, Ipswich. He died on the 19th July at 9-45pm from Amputation left thigh and Secondary Haemorrhage .

HOULDEN Thomas, Private 245035, 1/5th The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment died 20th August 1918 aged 20. He was born on the 22nd March 1898 to son of Joseph and Elizabeth of 4, Hall Bank, Mobberley, Cheshire. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 24th October 1916, aged 18 years and 1 month. and posted to the Army reserve. He was mobilised on the 24th October 1916 and posted to France on the 20th June 1917. He was killed in action on the 20th August 1918

He was born at Mobberley to Samuel and Priscilla who in 1911 were living at Town Lane, Mobberley. His brother Arthur who also fell was living at the address. Harry was a Groom and Gardener.He enlisted at Manchester and is at rest in Bertrancourt Military Cemetery, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. On the 17th May 1915 he joined up at St-Annes-on-Sea into 171 Brigade, Palestine County, Royal Field Artillery as gunner. By occupation he was a locomotive fireman (steam train) He embarked on the 10th February 1916 at Devonport and disembarked at Alexandria on the 23rd February 1916. He embarked Alexandria on the 27th March 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles on the 3rd April 1916. On the 27th June 1916 he died of wounds at 94th Field Ambulance, Rouen

JONES Horace William Private 16041, 10th Cheshire Regiment died 24th April 1918 aged 22. Born at Barrow and enlisted at Knutsford both in Cheshire. He was the son of Robert and Sarah Ellen of Spring Bank, Mobberley. He was employed as a gardener aged 15. He is at rest on Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany

KINGSLEY Donald Currie (Memorial has Donald. Private 6/3374, 1st Canterbury Regiment New Zealand Expeditionary Force died 8th June 1917 aged 24. He was born in 1893 at Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire to Charles and Hester Dorothea, nee Watson, and husband of Ethel R of George Street, Blenheim. In 1911 was living the family were living at Oakdene, Mobberley. He was a book keeper aged 18 working for his father was a manufacturer of pottery goods. On the 22nd November 1913 he left England via Liverpool on passenger ship, 'Ayshire' bound for Wellington, N.Z. He lived at Motueka New Zealand and embarked from Wellington N.Z of ship Tofua on the 13th November 1915 destination Suez, Egypt. and He is commemorated on the Messines Ridge N.Z. Memorial, Belgium

KIRK Leopold Frederick, private 14705, C Coy, 10th Cheshire Regiment died 7th June 1917 aged 23. He was the son of Frederick William and Emma of Burnham Cottage, Pavement Lane, Mobberley, Knutsford. He is at rest in St. Quentin Cabaret Military Cemetery, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his army record. he was born in the parish of St John, Hale and he lived at 13, Ashfield Road, Altrincham and was a sheet metal worker. He joined up aged 20 years and 200 days (A term which was used when I joined up in 1967) on the 4th September 1914 at Altrincham His mother was called Emma nd his wife was called Edith Mary nee Hope who he married on the 4th June 1908 at Christ Church, Staleybridge. He was in France on the 26th September 1916. On the 11th July 1916 he received a minor gunshot wound to his left ear which was treated in the field. He was discharged fit for service and he rejoined his unit on the 14th August 1916 at Rouen. On the 7th June 1917 he was killed in action. He left a widow and three children, Thomas, born 12th September 1910, Dorris born 10th October 1913 and Samuel born 16th June 1916.

MURPHY William Private 32603, 15th Cheshire Regiment died 25th May 1918. Born at Mobberley in 1893 and was the son of John and Sarah who in 1911 were living at 8, Market Place, Knutsford. He is at rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France

NORBURY Robert Gunner 92043, 11th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 29th September 1917. He was born at Mobberley, Cheshire to John and Betsy of Dairy Farm, Mobberley and brother of Samuel who also fell. is at rest in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his army record. he joined up aged 26 on the 11th december 1915 and posted to the Army Reserves . He was working on his parents farm as a cowman. He was mobilised on the 29th May 1915 and posted to the depot of the R.G.A.. On the 10th June 1916 he was posted to 184th Heavy Battery. He was in France from the 20th September 1916 and died of wounds at No7 Field Ambulance in France on the 29th September 1917

WEBB Colin Lance Corporal 9033, 8th Cheshire Regiment died of disease at Mesopotamia, 27th May 1916. He was born in Mobberley and is at rest in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. He gave his parents as George and Elizabeth and sister, Francis all living at Broadoak Lane, Parkside, Mobberley. He was stationed in India from the 1st February 1910 to 18th November 1914. Then UK, In France from the 16th January 1915 to 13th May 1915, back in UK, Then the Mediterranean from the 5th November 1915 to 27th May 1916. On the 10th May 1915 he was shot, slight wound near to one of his eyes. and was treated in the field at Canadian Stationary Hospital. On the 27th May 1916 he died of disease. On a army form which his sister, now Mrs Francis Harrop gave her mother as Mary Agnes, last know address was 16, Terrick Road, Alexandra Road, Woodgreen, London. Contact was made with his mother now called Mary Agnes Ward of "Wellesby" 26, Brownlow Road, New Southgate, London. She received his all his effects. George and Elizabeth Webb were grandparents His father was also called George

CURBISHLEY Albert Private 15609, 9th Cheshire Regiment killed in action 5th November 1916. He was born at Toft, and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial,
Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined aged 19yrs and 2 months on the 3rd September 1914. Prior to enlistment he was a postman and living at Toft Road with his parents Joseph and Alice. His father was originally his next of kin but later it was changed to his mother, Alice, now living at Moor Head, Bexton, Knutsford, Cheshire. On or near to the 19th September 1915 his father applied to the regiment to have his son discharged or put into the Home Service for some reason or other. On the 4th October 1915 Major C Parr allowed him to serve as he is over 17 years of age. On the 25th November 1915 he was wounded in the left shoulder and was treated at 76, Field Ambulance and on the 28th November 1915 was sent to England on Hospital Ship, SS Cambria from Wimereux. He was admitted into Thorncliffe War Hospital, Sheffield on the 29th November and was discharged fit for war service on the 30th December 1915. On the 5th November 1916 he was killed in action

Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 12th December 1915 and posted into the army reserve as private 33126, 14th Cheshire Regiment. He was aged 19 years and 1 months worked as a motor driver (Chauffeur) and lived with his mother at Hall Lodge, High Legh. He was mobilised on the 26th January 1916 and after his training he was posted to France with the Cheshire regiment on the 30th June 1916 and joined his regiment at Etaples on the 1st July 1916. On the 11th July 1916 he was transferred to the 1/7th Manchester Regiment and was allotted a new number, 43210. The 16th October 1916 he was wounded on duty and was treated in a field hospital The nature of his injury was not recorded. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in the field on the 18th February 1917 and on the 31st July 1917 he was killed in action at Ypres

He was a farm labourer and was living at Moston Manor House, Alderley Edge, Cheshire. He was posted into the 12th Cheshire Regiment as private 15904. On the 27th March 1915 he was transferred to the 22nd Divisional Cyclist Company. About the 1st June 1918 while in Salonica he scratched his left knee on some wire. The scratch was small and he did not report sick. Over a perion the knee became swollen and painful. On the 25th May 1918 he went sick and he was admitted 86th Field Hospital , Salonica suffering from Prepatellar Bursitis (housemaids knee) On the 1st June he was transferred to 21st Stationary Hospital suffering with septicaemia of the left knee. and then forwarded to 60th General Hospital, Salonica. On the 31st August 1918 he was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship, Goorkha On the 4th September 1918 he was admitted into the Military Hospital, Tigne dangerously ill. On the 29th September he died of staphylococcal septicaemia

Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up at Northwich on the 7th September 1914. He embarked on the 25th September 1915 at Southampton for France. On the 8th July 1916 he reported sick and was treated at 67 Field Ambulance and the same day to 59, Field Ambulance. On the 10th July transferred to 30, Casualty Clearing Station and from there on the 13th July he was sent to England for treatment on Hospital Ship, Western Australia suffering from Myalgia On the 14th July he was admitted to the 2nd Western General Hospital, Vernon Park, Manchester. His home address was given as Over. After he was discharged for war service he returned to France from Southampton on the 8th February 1917 and disembarked at Rouen the next day, 9th. He was posted to the 11th Cheshire Regiment the same day on then posted to the 10th battalion on the 24th February 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 1st January 1918 and was killed in action on the 24th March 1918
