K118 Charles McCARTHY. Boy 1st Class J/37065, Royal Navy on battleship HMS London. Born 11 October 1898 at Sutton, Surrey to Charles and Sarah McCarthy, nee Coombs. Enlisted 16 March 1915 as Boy 2nd Class on HMS Powerful at Portsmouth. Civilian occupation, roller boy. Died in Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi 16th June 1916 aged 18 years from cardiac failure following septic absorption. His mother of 3 Castle Cottages, Castle Ground, Reigate was informed of his death. Memorial erected by the officers and ship’s company of H.M.S. London as a mark of affection and sympathy.
At rest in Plot K Grave 118 Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.
His father, also Charles McCARTHY, served as Private 66103 Royal Army Medical Corps in the Great War. Enlisted 3 March 1915 and joined at RAMC Depot, Bulford 4 August 1915 aged 38 years and 5 months. Resided with his wife and family at 9 Yew Tree Terrace, Church Street, Hungerford. Fought in Salonica where he contracted Tuberculosis. Died 2 April 1919 at Stepping Hill Military Hospital, Stockport of pulmonary tuberculosis. His widow and children were all granted a war gratuity on the 21 November 1919. He is at rest in St Saviours Cemetery, Eddington, Hungerford. Berkshire.
