QUARRY Joseph. Private 55957, N Coy, Royal Army Medical Corps died at Imtarfa Hospital, 5th September 1915 aged 19. Erected by his brother, William. Son of George and Charlotte Quarry, of Orchard Mains, Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. Native of Makerstown, Kelso, Roxburgh.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up on the 20th January 1915 aged 19 years and 1 month. He lived at Makerstown with his parents and was a forrester by occupation. His father, George was his next of kin. At some stage he embarked to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force While in the Mediterranean he was employed as a hospital Orderly on Hospital Ship, Salta when he was taken ill. He was admitted into Military Hospital, Imtarfa, on the 21st August 1915 and died on the 5th September 1915. He died from toxaemia (blood poisoning by toxins from a local bacterial infection) dysentery and heart failure.
