STEADY John. Sergeant 48466, 2nd Sussex Regiment The Pompadoors died 21st December 1919 as the result of an accident in Malta His mother Matilda was granted a war gratuity on the 15th November 1920. He may have been the son of George and Matilda Steady of (1911) lived at Church Road, Brightlingsea, Essex. His occupation was a horseman on a farm.
MILLER John. Private, 57875, 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, died 18th August 1920, aged 27 years. The son of Mrs. Isabella Miller, 58 Sowerby Street, Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire His mother Isabella and sister Mrs Jane Hargreaves were granted a war gratuity on the 20th November 1920.
WASTELL John. Corporal, 57724, 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, died by committing suicide on the 26th July 1920 aged 21 years. Son of Edmund George Wastell, 121 Fishwick Parade, Preston, Lancashire who was granted a war gratuity on the 9th December 1920.
Some notes from what remains of his army records on Ancestry. He enlisted on the 15th January 1915 and transferred to the army reserve to await his mobilisation to join the colours. He had formerly served as Private 201607 4th Reserve Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He lived at at 71 Cemetery Road, Preston Lancashire with his father Edmund George Wastell and stepmother Alice Ada Nee Tully. She later moved to 21 Miller Road, Preston. His mother Eleanor nee Tully died in 1910. His occupation was a tram conductor. He was mobilised in 1919 aged 19 and 4 months. He was sent to Dublin as Private 57724 to join the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. On the 29th August 1919 he was posted along with his regiment to St Andrews Barracks, Pembroke, Malta. On the 26th July 1919 his body was found by a local on the Mosta to Rabat Road, Imtarfa, Malta. He had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. He left a letter which read. "I died by my own hand 4.40 Monday morning. Fond love to my dear sweetheart. Cpl. J. Wastell. God forgive." He was moved to Imtarfa Mortuary, then to Imtarfa Military Cemetery for burial.
His father born in 1865 was an Chelsea pensioner. He had served as Gunner 45294, Royal Horse Artillery B Brigade. On the 18th September 1888 aged 23 when his pension started.
