John SAVAGE

John SAVAGE. Rifleman B 1828, 8th The Rifle Brigade. Born 1868 to John and Elizabeth Savage, of Salford. 1871 residing with his parents at 11 Baines Court, Manchester. Husband of Jane Savage, nee McCabe. 1901 residing with his wife and children at 3 Heaps Buildings, Salford, Lancashire. In 1915 his wife and family were residing at the time of his death at 4 Seddon Street, Ordsall Lane, Salford, Manchester. He also served in India. Killed in action at Ypres Belgium 19 August 1915 aged 47. His widow was granted a war gratuity 10 January 1916 revised 25 August 1919.

He enlisted into the Manchester Regiment and posted as Private 1603 to the Regimental Depot at Ashton, Manchester 14 September 1886 aged 19, occupation, labourer. His next of kin was his mother residing in Salford. 5 January 1887 he was posted to the 1st Battalion, transferred to the 2nd Battalion 6 September 1888. He served in the East Indies from 8 September 1888 to 13 May 1894. Returned to England and was discharged 13 September 1898. His military conduct was not good whilst stationed in India. 17 September 1889 he was in military custody awaiting trial. He was tried and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment 21 September 1889. Returned to duty 5 October 1889. He was once again in military custody 7 May 1892 awaiting trial. 27 May 1892 he was tried and sentenced to 42 days imprisonment. He was returned to duty 8 July 1892. He fought in the battle of Mirauzai 1891.
He was awarded the Indian Medal of 1854 and clasp of Samana 1891 (Miranzai Expedition, N. W. Frontier)

This poppy cross was the base of a tree at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire on the 18 November 2018.
