John GEIBERRAS

Private, 2868, John Geiberras, 4th Pioneer Battalion, Australian Army. Joined up in Melbourne on the 25th May 1916 aged 28, occupation fireman. He parents were called Lucrietta and Emmanual of 170A, Stradd Santa Teresa, Cospicua, Malta
He embarked Brisbane on the 21st October 1916 per A36 Boona disembarked at Plymouth on the 10th January 1917. After training he embarked for France from Folkestone on the 4th June 1917 and disembarked at Harve on the 6th June 1917. On the 7th April 1918 he was wounded in action and was treated at the scene. The next day he was admitted to No 4, General Hospital, Arques, France with Gun shot wounds to he right forearm, fractured radius his chest and left buttock. Transferred from No 4 General Hospital to Reading War Hospital on Hospital Ship, Cambria on the 13th April 1918. On the 3rd June 1918 he was transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital Dartford, then on the 11th sent to No 2 Convalescent Hospital, Weymouth. He was discharged from this hospital on the 31st July 1918 and was returned to Australia on D 17 for medical discharge. Discharged in Australia on the 16 October 1918.
His home address in Australia was 3, Stock Street, South Melbourne, Victoria. He was living there on the 5th June 1923 when he applied for his medals.

A letter dated 11th February 1957 from the Imperial War Graves Commission, Anzac Agency, 622 St Kilda Road, Melbourne to Officer in Charge of Base Records, Canberra requesting verification on the late Private 2868 John Geiberras as his next of kin is requesting a permanent memorial to him in Malta.
