CAPTAIN J.C. BENGOUGH. GLOUCESTERSHIRE YEOMANRY(ROYAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE HUSSARS), T.F.

JOHN CROSBIE BENGOUGH, of The Ridge, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucester–shire, was the elder son of John Alan George Bengough,J.P.,and of Rosa Margaret his wife, second daughter of Colonel . Crosbie, of Ballyheigue Castle, County Kerry, and grandson of John Charles Bengough,.P.(O.R.,1842), High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1877. Two great-uncles and two uncles, on his father's side, were also in the School. He entered the School in 1902, and had his Cap in 1907. In the same year he passed into the R.M.A., Woolwich, but, his eyesight having caused his rejection for the Army, he went up to Emmanuel College, Cambridge ,in 1908, and took his degree in 191I.He then, for a time, farmed in the Transvaal, and returning to England, was given a Commission in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in 1913.He went with his Regiment to Egypt in April, 1915. He was made Staff Captain and appointed Military Landing Officer at Alexandria, and, in the same capacity, was sent to Lancashire Landing, W. Beach, in the Gallipoli Peninsula, in July of the same year. In October he re-joined his Regiment at Suvla Bay, and served as Bombing Officer and was in charge of a Trench Mortar. On the Regiment leaving to refit he became Divisional Bombing Officer and had a Bombing School at Suvla. Later, when the School was abolished owing to the evacuation of the. Peninsula, he was appointed Camp Commandant and A.D.e. to Major-General W.E.Peyton, C.V.O., C.B.,D.S.O.,G.O.C. the Egyptian Western Frontier Force. For the advance against the forces of the Senussi, in Western Egypt, he had been temporarily lent as Staff Captain to the. Colonel in command ofthe Cavalry, and fell in action whilst taking part in the brilliant and successful charge" of the Dorset Yeomanry at the Battle of Agagieh on February 26th, 1916. Age 27.He was mentioned in Despatches of April 9th, 1916, by the General commanding the Forces in Egypt "for gaIlant and distinguished service in the Field.
