James and Sarah Ann SLATTERY. Children of Sergeant, Michael and Elizabeth SLATTERY nee Edmonds. 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers. Who departed this life, the former on the 17th October 1870 aged 9 years and 2 months. The latter died on the 23rd October 1870, aged 5 years and 1 month. Sarah Ann was born in 1865 at Portsea, Hampshire, James born 1860, same place.
Both are at rest in Plot 01. Row 03. Grave 08. Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Michael SLATTERY (father)
In 1881 Michael was living at the Militia Mess House, Bury, Lancashire with his wife Elizabeth and children. His occupation was given as Sergeant with the 7th Royal Lancashire Militia. as an Army Pensioner. Elizabeth Slattery was the daughter of Sergeant James Edmonds and Mary. Born in Londonderry Ireland. In 1851 she was living with her parents at Chatham Barracks, Kent. He was serving with the 35th of Foot.
Michael Slattery died on the 19th March 1882 at Wellington Barracks, Bury. He was Sergeant in Her Majesty's Regiment of Foot, Lancashire Fusiliers. He formerly lived at Mess House, Bolton Road, Elton, and late of 42 Lord Street, Elton, Lancaster. His wife Elizabeth got his effects.
Their son Joseph Edward Slattery born in 1870 at Malta, joined the Royal Irish Fusiliers as Boy Soldier aged 14 years and 2 months on the 20th February 1884 On the 1st November 1884 he became Drummer,. Served in the Boer War, discharged on termination of engagement 19th February 1905 Re-joined the colours on the 6th April 1915 at Armagh, Ireland and posted to the Royal Irish Fusiliers as Private 18492 He was married on the 31st December 1893 at Union Street Chapel, Bury to Elizabeth Ellen Rogerson. Three children were recorded in his army records. Joseph Edmund, born 5th February 1895 James, born 22nd October 1897 and Clifford on the 28th December 1903. He was demobilised on the 20th March 1919 to his home at 150, Bolton Street, Bury.
