Iraqi MiG-25 Foxbat-B

US Military personnel prepare to remove an Iraqi MiG-25 Foxbat-B reconnaissance aircraft found buried beneath the sands at Al Taqqadum airfield west of Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Several MiG-25s and Su-25 aircraft have been found buried in various locations.

What's the point of those aircraft being buried? Only thing i can imagine is if former iraqi leaders calculated that this war is going as the first Gulf War and coalition forces will stop at some point and they have few planes left.

It was told to me that near to the end of the war, the Iraqi leaders were instructed to leave all their aircraft in the open, so that recce systems could see them all. However, somehow the message was translated incorrectly and the Iraqi's believe we instructed them to bury them.
One way or another, their Air Force was put out of action for good.....

After being buried in the sand, all they were was a mobile spare parts dump... assuming any parts at all were usable.
