While a P.o.W of the Japanese he was in command of the Royal Artillery P.o.W's not sure on land, but was in charge while they were inside Hell Ship, Lisbon Maru which was torpedoed by a U. S. Submarine in the China Sea.
He was able to escape the sinking ship only to be captured by Japanese Marines when he got on to an island. He was taken prisoner again and taken to Osaka Camp, Japan where he died at the hands of Japanese medical staff by giving him some medicine the 21 October 1942.
He is at rest in Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan
