Private Harry SPENDER No. 16283 3rd Bn.
North Staffordshire Regiment
Died 21 August 1917

He was born 10 December 1876 Cheswardine, Salop as Ernest Harry Spender to Benjamin and Elizabeth nee Arkinstall. He married as Ernest Harry, Miss Annie Elizabeth Salt on 13 November 1898 at St John’s Church, Burslem, Stoke on Trent and lived at 109 York Passage, Hanley, later moved to 17 Hope Street, Hanley. They had one child, John William born 20 March 1919 at Hanley.

Some notes from what remains of his army records

He joined up 4 January 1915 aged 37, resided at 109 York Passage, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, occupation potters printer. He was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment as private 140283. At date not known he was posted to France where on 21 March 1917 he was sick at 49 Field Ambulance suffering from myalgia. He was transferred on 23 March 1917 to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, France. About 25 March 1917 he was invalided to Bradford War Hospital, St Luke’s Hospital admitted on 26 March 1917 and discharged on the 1 May 1917. On 11 May 1917 he was admitted suffering from the complaint into Stoke on Trent War Hospital, transferred to 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield on 18 May 1917 and discharged to his home on 24 June 1917. Whilst at home he took his own life by hanging on 21 August 1917.

His wife’s new address was 11 Hope Street, Hanley.
