Harry CUMMINS

CUMMINS, Harry. Sapper 204176, Royal Engineers died 11th January 1921 aged 34. He was the son of James and Harriet and he was the husband of Bridget Margaret of 10, Rosefield Road, Knutsford, and he was born in Knutsford. He is at rest in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire. (The CWGC headstone have M H which is incorrect).
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 6th December 1915 aged 29 and 1 month, he was then posted to the army reserve. He lived at 21, Cranford Avenue, knutsford with his wife Bridget Margaret nee Solon who he married on the 14th April 1915 at St Vincent Roman Catholic Church at Knutsford. He was by occupation a joiner carpenter and he had been a volunteer with the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. On the 16th October 1916 he was mobilized and was transferred to Army Reserve Class W. On the 13th February 1917 he was posted to the Engineer Training Centre, (E.T.C.) at Newark as sapper 204176. On the 10th October 1918 he sustained a serious left knee injury whilst stationed at Mostle Camp!!, Theddlethorpe, Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire. He was up a ladder checking the condition a hut roof when the ladder broke at the top, He fell to the ground and landed on his left knee. He was treated at the camp and was confined to his quarters. A Court of Enquiry was held at the camp where he found not be at fault and the accident as unavoidable. On the 2nd August 1919 he was discharged to pension aged 35 and no longer physically fit for war service.
