Embroidered Regimental Badges.
"These embroidered Regimental badges were manufactured in Bolton, Lancashire by a company trading as "Penelope". They were issued as a small embroidery kits, and were used by the Red Cross for occupational therapy in military hospitals and convalescence units World wide during World War II
The backing material did not come with the kits but was found from any sources by the Red Cross workers. Being war time no proper embroidery was available.
These badges were embroidered in various locations: 53rd British General Hospital, Imtafa, Malta G.C; British Military Hospital Saighton Grange, Chester; Red Cross Convalescence Unit, Saighton Grange, Chester. The Miners Convalescence Home, The Promenade, Southport, which was used as a war time military hospital.
These badges were embroidered in six strand silk which makes them quite bulky. Today two strands in the norm for a neater result".
