This vehicle was created due to a requirement put out by the Bundeswehr in the late 1960's. German and Swiss firms competed for the development contract,with the swiss company of Contraves winning it. It entered service with the Bundeswehr in 1978. It use the leopard 1 chassis and production was complete in 1980.
