Rifleman George Verough GILBERT No. R/19546 16th Bn. King's Royal Rifle Corps
Died 29 September 1918

Son of Horace Francis and Mary Grace Gilbert(nee Myatt). In 1919 his mother was residing at 54 Kensington Grove, London SW. His dependant and next of kin was Louisa Mary Wilson 25 Brooke Street, Rugeley who was classed as "their adopted mother and guardian".
He joined up February 1916 aged 22 years and 8 months, occupation butcher. He then resided at 25 Upper Brooke Street, Rugeley.
He went to France 17 July 1916. 25 August 1916 he received shrapnel wounds to hand, lip and knees and was treated the same day at 13 Field Ambulance then transferred to 38 Casualty Clearance Station. 27 August 1916 at No.5 General Hospital, France. 5 September 1916 he was sent to England on hospital ship St Patrick and admitted to Hammersmith Military Hospital, Shepherds Bush, London. He was discharged, fit for service and he embarked from Southampton 4 February 1917 arriving at Le Harve the next day. 29 September 1918 he was reported missing, presumed killed in action or died of wounds.

Commemorated on a family headstone at

Rugeley Cemetery, Staffordshire.
