George BAVISTER

Extended Description
George BAVISTER. (Bavester 1851 census) Gunner, Royal Marine Artillery who died while on H.M.S. Royal Oak during her passage from Syracuse to Malta, 3rd November 1865 aged 33. This monument is erected by his sorrowing comrades. Native of Harlington, Bedfordshire, son of Thomas and Sarah nee Smith and living in 1841 and 1851 with his parents in the village of Chalton, parish of Toddington. In 1861 he was on Sailing Ship, Corfu Roads aged 27, gunner with the Royal Navy. At rest in Ta Braxia Cemetery, Malta.
His headstone was badly damaged by the bombing in the Second World War. Most of the pieces were found and the headstone was reconstructed in 2002.
