Sergeant Pilot 1062375 Frederick George Thane McGahey. Royal Air Force VR. of 53 Operational Training Unit R.A.F. Llandow
Born 1922 to George Thane and Minnie Florence McGahey, nee Jackson.
The 9 July 1941 he was flying his Spitfire P9383 on a training exercise (Poss Dogfight) over Wales when he collided with another Spitfire N3230 also from the same unit. This Spitfire came down in a field opposite Llan Lane and was completely destroyed by fire. The pilot managed to bail out and escape uninjured. Sergeant MCGahey Spitfire crashed into a field at Tydraw Farm, Colwinston, Glamorgan, Wales, he did not bail out and was killed he was only 19.
For Honour, Liberty and Truth he sacrificed his glorious youth, he died, if it were death to give his life, that all his friends might live.

Mrs Fred McGahey (19) a Cadet in the RAF met his death in a flying accident in Belfast last week. Particulars of the accident are not yet known in Edenderry. Deceased was brother of Mr B McGahey, lately of Killinagh Briquet Factory (Killnagh Bog) and Edenderry Shoe Factory.

He is at rest in St Patrick's extended churchyard, Drumbeg County Down Grave Sec. G.2. Grave 8.

His brother Lieutenant Robert William Alfred McGahey 51st Highland Division WW2. Born 25 April 1918. Died 27 August 2006.
His ashes were placed here with his father and brother.
