Frank WITHERS

WITHERS, Frank. Private 31236, 7th Prince of Wales Volunteers, South Lancashire Regiment, formerly 23634, South Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds in France 30th October 1916 aged 22. He was the only son of Henry and Sarah. In 1911 he was living with his parents at 125, Merridale Street West, Wolverhampton and he was employed as a cabinet maker. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Merridale Cemetery, Wolverhampton. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 11th December 1915 aged 22 years and 150 days and was posted to the army reserve. He was a carpenter, joiner and lived with his parents at 77, Great Brickkiln Street, Wolverhampton. On the 10th April 1916 he was mobilized and was posted the7th South Staffordshire Regiment Depot as private 23634. After basic training he was posted along with others to join the B.E.F. France. He embarked from Folkestone on the 5th September 1916, disembarking at Boulogne-sur-Mer the same day and they marched to the 9th Infantry Base Depot for posting to the 7th battalion. On the 6th he was posted to the 7th battalion. On the 21st September 1916 he was transferred to the 7th South Lancashire Regiment now as private 31236 and was posted to A Company. He was wounded in action on the 22nd October 1916, He was shot in he left knee, right leg and head. He was have been treated in the field then moved to No9 Casualty Clearing Station on the 23rd and on the same day to No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen. Whilst in hospital he had his left leg amputated. A interdepartmental telegram was sent, the condition and what treatment was given and time and date of death, ending with the word Proelicas. (Military telegraph address) He died of wounds at 7.10am on the 30th October 1916 at No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France.
