F088 ARTHUR ROY BATTEN. Able Seaman C/LD/X5083 Royal Navy (V.R.) on HMS Cleopatra. Born 10 May 1918 at Tooting, London to Arthur James and Catherine Maria Batten, of Tooting, London. 1929 he was residing at 23 Woodbury Street, Tooting, London Died Royal Naval Hospital, Malta 15th February 1942 aged 23 years from injuries received in action on the 14th.

14 February Cruiser HMS Cleopatra and destroyer Fortune were attacked by JU 88 bombers as they headed towards Grand Harbour this morning. Cleopatra was hit by a 500kg bomb which passed through the forward structure and exploded, killing or mortally injuring twenty of the crew. The two ships had made a brave dash through the western Mediterranean via Gibraltar, bringing essential spares to Malta. Despite the bombing, both vessels made it in to harbour where Cleopatra was repaired.

F088 DENNIS STYAN GILL. Ordinary Seaman C/JX278963 Royal Navy (VR), HMS Cleopatra. Born 18 June 1922 at Wokingham, Surrey to Francis Andrew and Edith May Gill, of Pine Lodge, Woodham Lane, Woking, Surrey. Died in Naval Hospital 15th February 1942 aged 19 years from injuries received in action the 14th.


F088 RONALD WILLIAM JOHNSTON. Ordinary Seaman C/TD/X2034, Royal Navy (VR) on HMS Cleopatra. Born 29 June 1919 at Blyth, Northumberland to Robert James and Florence Johnston, of Blyth, Northumberland. Died 15th February 1942 aged 22 years. from injuries received in action the 14th. Wills and Admin, Ancestry. He resided at 27 Hedley Avenue, Blyth, Northumberland. Died on date stated and his effects went to his father, furnishing manager.

F088 WILLIAM ALFRED MITCHELL, Stoker 1st Class, C/KX105864 Royal Navy (VR) on HMS Cleopatra. Born 11 January 1915 at Essington, Hertfordshire to Alfred and Alice Louisa Mitchell, of New Barnet, Hertfordshire. Died 15th February 1942 aged 27 years from injuries received in action on the 14th.

F088 WILLIAM ALAN ROBINSON. Able Seaman C/JX279878 Royal Navy (VR) on HMS Cleopatra. Born 8 November 1922 at North Ferriby, Yorkshire to Thomas and Margaret Helene Robinson, nee Barnard of Cherry Burton, Yorkshire. Died 15th February 1942 aged 19 years from injuries received in action on the 14th.
Wills and Admin, Ancestry - He resided at Cranford, Ferriby, Yorkshire. Died on date stated and his effects went to his mother.

F088 LEONARD STANLEY WARREN. (Not Leslie) Ordinary Seaman C/JX300196 Royal Navy on HMS Cleopatra. Born 9 January 1921 at Bethnal Green, London to Robert H and Minnie Warren nee Jones. Naval record on Ancestry BMD record show Leonard Stanley Warren.
Died 15th February 1942 aged 21 years from injuries received in action on the 14th.

F088 SIDNEY CHEW. Able Seaman D/JX188484, HMS Maori (24) Born 15 October 1923 at Stroud, Gloucestershire to William Joel and Sarah Chew, nee Archer of Windsor Place, Stroud, Gloucestershire. Killed 15th February 1942 aged 18 years as the result on enemy bombing on his ship in the Grand Harbour, Malta.

HMS Maori was a Tribal-class destroyer named after the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand. She served with the Mediterranean Fleet until she was bombed and sunk by German aircraft while at Malta in 1942. Her wreck was later raised and scuttled outside the Grand Harbour. The wreck is now a dive site.
