F031 JAMES FARLEY CARTER Mentioned in Despatches, (Posthumous), Petty Officer D/JX111443 Royal Navy HM Submarine Dolphin. Born 16 April 1909 at Arizona, U.S.A. to William and Annie Carter. Husband of Vera Clarine Carter, of Newquay, Cornwall. Died 5th May 1941 aged 32 years of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning whilst on board Submarine Upholder.

The following has been extracted from a book called” U” Class Submarine - On the 5th May 1941 Upholder was in Malta harbour when it experienced the hot run of a torpedo in its tube. In an effort to control the situation both Lieutenant Christopher Holditch Read, Royal Navy and Petty Officer James Farley Carter lost their lives. N.B. The author could find NO records of Christopher H Read being killed on this date.

No burial record can be found for Lieutenant Christopher Holditch Read. He was Mentioned in Despatches but NOT posthumously. Further research has found the following - Christopher Holditch Read was born 13 May 1919, son of Arthur B H Read and Murial nee Hanson and died 20 April 2005 aged 85 at Brighton. He served in the Royal Navy until 1948 having reached the rank of Lieutenant-Commander and being Mentioned in Dispatches during the Second World War. In 1950 he entered Queen’s College, Birmingham and was ordained deacon in 1953 and priest in 1954. From 1953 to 1956 he was Assistant Curate of Portishead and then from 1956 to 1958 Assistant Curate of Walton-on-Trent and Roliston. He was Rector of Bonsall and Vicar of Cromford from 1958 to 1963. He was then Rector of Grangemouth from 1963 to 1972. From 1972 to 1987 he was Vicar of Parwich with Alsop-en-le-Dale. He was also Priest-in-Charge of Tissington from 1977 to 1978 and Fenny Bentley, Thorpe and Tissington from 1978 to 1987.

F031 JOHN BURGESS, Leading Stoker, P/KX97648 Royal Navy on HMS Speedy, (Halcyon Minesweeper J17). Born 29 May 1921 at Hesleden, County Durham to John W. and Ellen Burgess, of Stretford, Lancashire. Died 15th May 1943 aged 21 years. The ship hit a mine about 4 miles off St Elmo point which blew a hole in the hull, four crewmen died.

F031 JAMES HENDRY WILSON. Chief-Stoker P/K63347 Royal Navy on HMS Speedy, (Halcyon Minesweeper J17). Born 29 November 1899 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire to James Henry and Grace Rankin Wilson. First enlisted 15 April 1919 on HMS Victory II as Acting Stoker II. Previous occupation, Black Furnace labourer and soldier for 119 days with the Royal Engineers. On the 3 December 1923 he was transferred to HMS Dublin as Stoker Class I, K63347 on the 21st January 1941 left HMS Speedy. Husband of A.P.Wilson, of Clydebank, Dumbartonshire. Died on shore Base St Angelo, Malta 15th May 1943 aged 43 years of injuries caused by an explosion to his ship.
