In late 1941, the Valentine with it's 2 Pounder gun was becoming quite obsolescent and the General Staff began looking for a replacement; in the mean time they urged that the Valentine be re-armed with the successor to the 2 Pounder - the 6 Pounder - as a stop-gap until a replacement could be found. This proved a difficult task as the turret was rather small and cramped even after the design was altered from the Mk I and II Valentine to allow for the addition of a third turret crewmember with the Mk III. Instead it was decided that the gun should be mounted in an SPG format, which Vickers was able to do and present in mid 1942:
