Daily Malta Chronicle and Garrison Gazette - Saturday 08 May 1915

The deepest impression was manifest yesterday afternoon, in the silent crowds which lined the principal streets along the route from the mortuary of the Military Hospital, Valletta, in respect to the remains of the late Captain Eric Seymour Stephenson D. S.0., who, as already reported, succumbed on the previous day following upon wounds sustained during the operations in the Dardanelles. The interest and sympathy was heightened by the circumstance that it were the first sad instance of its character which has occurred since the arrival of the wounded in Malta; and the painful impression which was created, testified in touching manifestations to the depth of sincerity shared in by the general community, at the untimely end of the gallant officer.
The late Captain Eric Seymour Stephenson, D.S.0., had only completed 36 years on the 21st ultimo. He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment as Second Lieutenant from Brabant's Horse raised during the South African War. He became lieutenant in 1905 and captain in June 1911. He served throughout the whole Boer war. In the early stages of the war he was employed with the Mounted Infantry and with Brabant's Horse, and took part in the operations in the Orange River Colony including the actions at Wittebergen. Later he saw service in Cape Colony, in the Transvaal, and in the Zululand Frontier of Natal. He was twice mentioned in despatches, received the Queen's Medal with four Clasps and the King's Medal with 2 clasps. His distinguished service also won him the D.S.O. Whilst employed with the Egyptian Army the late gallant officer participated in the operations in Jebel Nyima District in Southern Kordofan and was awarded the Egyptian medal with clasp. The funeral was worthy of the memory of the deceased officer whose remains were conveyed to their last resting place with full military honours.
Leaving the mortuary at 4.30 the cortege moved off in the following order: Firing Party of the Territorial Regiment, composed of 100 rank and file under the command of Captain Read, Lieut. Stark and Lieut. Lovell, Ar. Sergt. Raymond and Sergt. Watson.
The Band of the Royal Artillery (Malta) and Buglers of the Territorial Regiment. The coffin covered with the Union Jack, on which were placed deceased's helmet and sword, borne on a gun carriage drawn by four horses with S.S.M. Gurney A.S.C., as leader and Farr. S. Sergt. Grainge A.S.C. as off rider.

Arriving at the Ta Braxia Cemetery, the coffin was unhearsed and borne to the grave, preceded by the Revnd. E. Edmonds Smith, M.A., C.F. His Excellency the Governor was represented by Captain the Contino Teuma Castelletti, A.D.C. The sad service having been impressively read, the coffin was lowered into the grave, after which the usual three volleys were fired, followed by the sounding of the "Last Post" which closed the ceremony.
