Erdington Postmen World War One Memorial

This tablet was erected to the glorious memory of the Local Postmen who fell in the Great War 1914 - 1918

This stone was removed from a building in Ladywood and relayed here (National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire) on the 2nd July 2014 in memory of 7 Postmen from Erdington who were killed during WW1

LEADBEATER Alexander. Rifleman 14/44255 14th Royal Irish Rifles died 28th June 1917 aged 42. He was the son of James and Mary Leadbeater of Leamington; husband of Mary Leadbeater nee Twist of 33, Edwards Road, Erdington, Birmingham. He is at rest in Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium.

He was born on the 20th September 1874 to James Leadbeater and Emily Dickens at Emscote, Warwickshire and enlisted into the army on the 8th April 1892.

NEAL Ernest Cornelius. (correct name, Cornelius Ernest) Private 6915, 1st Cameronian Scottish Rifles, died of wounds on the 26th August 1915. He was born at St George's Birmingham and was the husband of Edith Emma nee Deakin of 66, Farnham Road, Handsworth, Birmingham and was the son of Henry and Mary Ann of 8, Woodbine Place, Wilton Street, Aston, Birmingham. In 1911 he was working as a railway porter. He is at rest in Chocques Military Cemetery, France

CONCANNON Frank. Sergeant 6529, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment, died of wounds 30th June 1916. He was born at Erdington, Birmingham, and he is at rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. In 1911 he was living at 68, Woodstock Street, Birmingham and was employed as a postman. He was married at the time of the census, his wife was not at home.

HOLMES Henry James. Acting Bombardier 63975, Royal Field Artillery, killed in action 18th July 1916, aged 26. He was the son of Henry and Mary Ann of 295, Bolton Road, Small Heath, Aston, Warwickshire. In 1911 aged 21 he was at No4, Depot of the Royal Field Artillery at Fort Purbrook, Cosham, Hampshire. He is at rest in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France

MEREDITH Alfred Edwin. Gunner 283347, 210 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, died 21st December 1917. He was the husband of Albertina Meredith, of 70, Oliver Road, Erdington, Birmingham. Native of Harborne, Birmingham. He is at rest in Dernancourt Cummunal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

SHARP Albert Edward. Private 500262, 665th Argicultural Coy, Labour Corps, formerly Private 291375, 2/7th Devonshire Regiment, died 5th December 1917 aged 40. He was the husband of Caroline A of 6, Cotton Lane, Erdington, Warwickshire. He is at rest in St Barnabas Churchyard, Erdington, Warwickshire.

Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He attested at Birmingham on the 15th October 1915 and called to the colours on the 25th October 1915 and posted to RAMC at Chartham Military Hospital nearCanterbury as private 103123. He was aged 27 years and 334 days and was a postman. He lived at 23, Fern Road, Erdington with his wife and two children.
On the 29th November 1910 at St Peter and St Paul's church, Erdington he married Florence Jessie Humphries There children, Charles James born 1st February 1911 and Arthur Edwin born 3rd February 1913 both at Erdington
He was medically discharged to Chelsea Pension on the 20th January 1917 with Tuberculosis of the Lung (TB)
