David Cromie. Stoker 1st Class D/KX152720 Royal Navy on fast minelaying cruiser. H.M.S. Addiel (M39)
Born 25 February 1924 to Albert and Agnes Cromie of Ballywalter County Down Northern Ireland.
Died in Taranto Harbour, Italy (ships destination) during Operation Slapstick by mines on the 10 September 1943. The mines had been laid by German torpedo boats S-54 and S-61 as they left the harbour few hours earlier. The ship broke in half and sunk in four minutes, he was aged 19 years. At the time of the explosion there were troops from British 1st Airbourne Division, (6th Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion and 204 (Oban) Anti Tank Battery Royal Artillery disembarking for shore.
He is commemorated on a family grave in Whitechurch Cemetery Ballywalter also on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
