He was born in 1885 at Shelton, Stoke on Trent to William and Annie of (1891) 15 Castle Street, Hanley. Married Miss Mary Ann Williams 7 August 1898 at St Mark’s Parish Church, Shelton, Stoke on Trent. Lived at 22 Castle Street, Hanley and had the following children. Daniel, born 26.8.1902, at Hanley, John, born 24.11.1905 at Hanley, Charles, born 5 April 1910 at Doncaster and Annie born 9.9.13 at Hanley His occupation was a collier, working under ground.
He joined up 27 August 1914 aged 29 and was posted to as Private 11145 6th Leicestershire Regiment. Posted to the BEF in France 29 July 1915 and transferred to the 1/4th Lincolnshire Regiment as Private 20004. He received a gunshot wound to his right arm 14 July 1916 and treated at 65 Field Ambulance, transferred same day to 34 Causality Clearing Station. 15 July 1916 admitted into 9 General Hospital, Rouen. Following day invalided to England on Hospital ship Cairnsbrook Castle. At some date he was discharged fit for war service and embarked for France from Folkestone 26 October 1916. He went sick at the front 21 November 1916 and was admitted to 9 Infantry Brigade Depot, Calais. 28 November he was in No. 30 General Hospital, Calais. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Cambria 10 December 1916. .On his medical Board dated 21 December 1916 he was totally disabled. He suffered from an enlarged heart which had a long loud double aortic beat. He was discharged 11 January 1917 to his home at 22 Castle Street, Shelton.
